It was well into the night, roughly midnight. The rain had passed after the others in the manor had gone to sleep, the servants in the servant's quarters, the earl and his guest asleep in their rooms. The only one's who weren't asleep were the two demons, one who was busy up atop the roof of the manor.
Lilith watched as the stars passed above, looking off into the dark blue of the night sky. She remembered when the sky used to be much clearer, when the galaxy itself could be seen anywhere from the earth. Ah, those were the early days of the universe, back when there was no suffering, at least until hell came along.
She heard the clicking of well polished shoes, not bothering to give her attention to the demon behind her. She didn't want to give him the attention he obviously wanted, nor look him in the face. She remembered how many women he seduced with that blood red gaze, how many women were thrown down to the depths of hell because if him. It honestly disgusted her, not out of jealousy, but out of the anger she felt for taking her meals usually.
"Oh? Not going to face me, night owl?" Lilith could hear the smirk in his voice. "I thought that you liked hearing my voice."
"To me, your voice is like nails on a chalkboard, or perhaps sandpaper." Lilith snapped back, still facing the nearby forest.
"I thought you found my voice pleasant. That was what you said that day, remember?"
"For hell's sake, you must stop living in the past, Sebastian. The document is annulled, the empire fell ages ago. As long as the empire lives, the contract stands. And as you can see, the Roman empire is long gone."
Lilith had turned to face him. She regrated that action, having to stare into his ruby gaze. She never wanted to speak of that time, the time before what had happened 200 years ago. Back when they were still friends, when they might have been something more.
The actual marriage was supposed to be between two households, during the glory days of the Roman Empire. When the daughter of the household Lilith worked for passed away due to an unknown illness, it was decided that the two servants would marry as a combination of the two houses instead.
And because of that, Sebastian and Lilith are married according to Roman Law.
"Must you always be so stubborn? What happened that day wasn't my fault. In fact, it was yours." Sebastian snapped Lilith out of her thoughts, making her face him again.
"Yes, I must be stubborn. It was not my fault, it was a contract, that's why. You stole my meal, much like you have every other time. If I were being honest, you are the stubborn one."
Lilith stood up, walking away and jumping off the roof to the garden as Sebastian watched. He didn't think that this conversation would end that way, but honestly he expected this from her. As he remembered her saying once, 'A demon of Wrath never changes.'
