Stefania Spampinato was a girl from a good family and part of the Italian aristocracy. She lived in Firenze, the capital of Tuscany, in the Vincigliata castle. She lived with her sister Daniella and her brother Salvatore and two other adopted brothers. She was very close to her two cousins Giacomo Gianniotti and Alberto Frezza. They were like her brothers. They had been raised together because an illness had affected their family and the two young men had come to live with the Spampinato family. Stefania's brother and sister were both married and had children. They were eight and ten years older than her.

Danielle Savre was also a girl from a good family, but from the French aristocracy. She was the daughter of a count of Blois. She was living in the castle of Chambord, which had been lent to her family by Louis XV, some years before, with her parents and her sister Stephanie. Her older sister was married to a French aristocrat and lived there with her family as well.

It was then 1740, five years before the castle was offered to the Marshal of Saxony. Stefania and Danielle were then sixteen years old. They had managed to avoid being offered in marriage to a man.

This was the reason for their meeting. It was common, at that time, to make an alliance with a family from another country, to strengthen the ties between nations.

Giacomo and Alberto had both been appointed to court Danielle. As for Stefania, her father had difficulty finding a husband worthy of her. She was his little princess and he could not force himself to let her fly away.

He had had this revelation a year earlier when he saw a troupe come to the castle to perform William Shakespeare's tragedy, Romeo and Juliet. The troubadours who had interpreted the play had turned it into a musical, and when Father Capulet sang the song "Have a Daughter", it struck him. {French song}

' To have a daughter
A little opal
Eyes that shine
Skin so pale

To have a daughter
Is to make a woman
A little virtuoso
Before her scales

To have a girl
A heart of sand
Gift of God
Gift of the devil

To have a girl
Is to do a crime
Where the guilty party is the victim
To have a daughter

She is my life, she is my blood
She is the fruit of my twenty years
And I curse all her lovers
She is my life, she is my blood
And I curse all her lovers

To have a girl is to tremble with fear
That she makes up for a liar

To have a daughter is to never again
To treat women like I did
To have a daughter

I hate men and their looks
I know their tricks, and their victories
And when the day comes, when one of them
Will take my daughter and call me sir

Then that day, and forever
I'll double lock my heart
My heart and I will become deaf

To have a daughter is to continue to hope
And still believe, that when the day of my death comes
She will carry deep inside her body
This spark of the one who in turn
And for love, will come to cry out with a heart so heavy

To have a daughter
A little opal
Eyes that shine
A skin so pale

To have a girl
Is to do a crime
Where the guilty party is the victim

To have a girl
To have a daughter...'

Since that day he had postponed the deadline of promising her to a man.
