Maya was sitting on the roof of the Space Needle in Seattle, her back was against the antenna and she was crouched down. She was trying to cut herself off from the world.

She had a hard time adjusting to this new life. That's why even today, almost a year later, she was still having trouble controlling her newfound abilities. She had never dreamed of using them and she refused to use them except to come here.

That was the reason she came to the roof of the Space Needle, there was a certain tranquility, when she thought back to her life before. When everything was simpler.

Soon a year and since that date, she had not had any adventure, it was sometimes difficult for her to manage her newly acquired strength.

She thought back to that day in June, when the station she was captain of, and still is, was sent to a landslide in the town of Smallville, Kansas. She still didn't know why Chief McCallister had sent them to this operation so far from home.

She could still see herself buried thinking she was going to die.

/Flashback/

Maya and her team had been sent on a response with firefighters from several large cities. Every top station in every county was selected.

Obviously for Seattle, Station 19 was chosen.

They arrived at the scene and formed teams. While rappelling down one of the caves first, Maya was trapped in a rock fall. Her rope was cut and she fell. It took two days for her colleagues to find her body.

She was unconscious for a while but surprisingly quickly recovered. A miracle of medicine for the doctors who had examined her, despite the various scars she had.

It was only a few days after their return to Seattle that changes were felt.

Probably due to the backlash of her body, which had drawn all her energy to heal herself.

At first she found that she could see much better, even from a distance, but that she felt some discomfort with noise. She had then consulted a specialist but nothing had been detected, except the fact that she had perfect hearing.

Then a few days later it was her strength's turn to increase tenfold. She then had difficulty controlling herself. At first, she had arranged at work not to intervene in the missions. Breaking down a door, or doing tasks requiring meticulousness in the gesture, had become a real torture. She had then pretended to have some after-effects due to her fall in the cave.

After a few days, another ability had appeared. This time, it was the last one. She was able to fly.

It seemed surealist to her.

Of course she knew that Superman and Supergirl existed, that they were the number one superheroes in the United States, but she had never imagined that she would be able to receive even a small part of their gifts, let alone four abilities.

She loved those kinds of superheroes, but she had always been rather proud to be the other kind of superhero, the ones who ran into burning buildings when everyone else was out, not because they were invincible, but because they had a certain courage in them, which made them real-life, everyday heroes.

She didn't know how long it would last, whether it was permanent or not.

Besides, it wasn't as if Superman had left her phone number, or if she could go to a special superhero doctor's office.

/End of flashback/

She had never used the abilities she had acquired. Not out of fear, but more out of concern for her personality. She felt that she was not the kind of woman to play savior, outside of her job as a firefighter.
