Maya was one of the strongest athletes in her high school. In her class she was even the best. So much so that her coach entered her in every competition in hopes that she would go to the Olympics.
Her coach? Lane, her father, who was very hard on her. But that's all she'd known all her life, so she was fine with it.
However, her grades had to remain perfect. She was struggling in a couple of courses, though. One in particular.
So, she and her coach were called to the office of the school counselor, Mrs. Grey. Principal Bailey was also there.
-Hello Maya, how are you today? Asked Meredith Grey.
- "I'm fine thank you"
- “You look tired," she said, looking at the coach with a glare.
- “Meredith, please," said Miranda Bailey.
- "No, I'm fine, really."
- "Okay, I'll believe you. I called you in, I called both of you in because your grades, especially in one class, are terrible. You have to raise your average in this course. Otherwise I will be forced to remove you from the running team."
- "You can't do that!" Lane snapped.
- "coach, I'm here to make sure you don't cross the line," threatened the principal.
- "but I..." began the young girl.
- “I know, Maya, that it's not fair and it's just a class. But you made a commitment and I can't make an exception, even for our future Olympic champion.”
- "okay"
- "what I'm proposing is that you reduce your training by an hour a day..."
Coach Bishop had begun to growl. Meredith then looked at him sideways before continuing.
- "So, I was saying, that you reduce your training by at least an hour a day and take private lessons in that subject."
Maya looked at her father in expectation of approval. He waved his hand in the air as if to say 'go ahead’.
- "okay."
- "and I know that competition entries are expensive. So, I polled the students with the best grades and two-three are willing to give you free Italian lessons. I'll let you choose, although I have a slight preference."
- "well, who are they?"
- "you have Caterina Scorsone who is of Italian origin, April Kepner, Maggie Pierce, you have Andrea DeLuca and even though he is Italian, I think he is a little young to be giving lessons, he is a year younger than you... Or finally, you have Carina DeLuca, her older sister, she lived in Italy for a long time with her brother, and she's a senior."
- "who were you thinking of as a better choice?"
- "it may not be fair in view of her background but Carina is the only one who has only A+ in Italian, never a mistake, sometimes she even corrects the teacher, she has a perfect average, in general, in all the classes. She is shy but very nice and has a lot of patience."
- "I think I see who it is. I'm not sure... okay, I'll take her then, if she's still okay." She'd probably run into her once or twice, if it was her. She was a very beautiful girl... As far as she could remember.
Meredith picked up her phone.
- "Yes, Schmidt? Can you please have Carina DeLuca sent to me?"
In barely 30 seconds, the voice of Ms. Grey's secretary, Levi, came over the speakerphone, asking Carina DeLuca to come to the counselor's office.
