Maya had been a firefighter for two years now at Station 19.
She was twenty-four years old and was still thinking about her sixteenth birthday when she had gone with her class to Italy, in the south of Italy near Naples.

/Eight years earlier/

-"Listen carefully to your names because I'm not going to do this all over again," said Mr. DiMaggio, Maya's Italian teacher, while they were still on the bus.
"I'll give you the families you'll be staying with in Italy..."

---

Once they arrived at their destination, they all got off and the families came to introduce themselves one by one to the teacher.

-"buongiorno, Lucia DeLuca" said the woman in front of the professor

-"Maya, this is for you" he said to the blonde and added "Your daughter is not here?"

- "Mia figlia? Carina?"

- "Non il corrispondente di Maya, Andrea" [Not Maya's correspondent, Andrea]

- "sono Andrea" said the young man who accompanied Mrs. DeLuca

- "Ah... Capisco dove il mio collega ha sbagliato. Non affidate mai un incarico di spedizione a qualcuno che non parla italiano. Mi dispiace, le è stato dato una amica di penna e non un amico di penna. Vedrò cosa posso fare." [Ah... I understand where my colleague could have gone wrong. Never give a dispatch task to someone who doesn't speak Italian. I'm sorry, you were given a girl and not a boy. I'll see what I can do]

- "Ah sì, Andrea è misto" [Ah yes Andrea is mixed]

- "Avrei dovuto chiedere un chiarimento, mi dispiace" [I should have asked for clarification, I am sorry].

- "And what do I do now?" Maya cut them off

-"Stay to the side, hopefully we have a boy who goes to a girl's house".

The teacher had explained this to Ms. DeLuca, but the more the bus emptied, the more their hope did too.

After twenty minutes, everyone had been distributed.

- "well it looks like we have an unprecedented situation, Maya, you're going to have to go to the DeLuca's, do you have a problem with that?"

- "no"

- "Signora DeLuca..." [Mrs. DeLuca...]

- "I understand English, that's not a problem for us either. We'll put Maya in with Andrea's sister if it's convenient for both of them."

On the way back Lucia, who had introduced herself, Andrea's mother, was laughing at the situation. Andrea much less he did not like that the Americans confuse him with a girl, more especially as in Italy his first name was widespread.

Maya tried to speak as much Italian as possible, but she was shy and not necessarily the best in her class in Italian. She was mostly dedicated to running and had obtained the minimum grades to be allowed to join her class.

What also saved her was the fact that her teachers saw how her father was pushing her and wanted to give her a break from the race track.

Maya and Andrea were talking half in English and half in Italian. In fact, Lucia and Andrea had a very good level of English.

When she arrived at the DeLuca's house, the American was under the spell. The family house was all stone, on one floor, olive trees and other fruit trees such as lemons and orange trees lined the property. It was extremely beautiful and she was not used to this heat, nor to this sun at this time of year, Seattle could be very gray in general and rainy.
