i honestly dunno what opinion I have on this...
I'd agreed every time I'd seen someone argue that people are allowed to ult popular groups and bias the more popular members. They always had a point that stans shouldn't act superior just because they favor the underrated. . . It's agreeable that going oUT oF yOuR wAy to stick to the less popular is unnecessary...
tBh even though I agree, I sometimes act like that 💀 (admitting to hypocrisy). I rarely say anything out loud, but I do get mad when ppl *at my school* still go around saying "stan BTS" or "stan blackpink". Like no offense but everybody has heard of them both at this point. Instead of telling them to sTaN (which will probably annoy them more), armys & blinks should just show them a snippet of one of their good songs (possibly a less popular song or at least a part that isn't viral). Most people have probably heard super iconic lines like "LeTs kiLL tHiS LoVe", "hiChU wiT dAt dU dU dDu" & "SMOOTH LIKE BUTTER" + "iM sO siCk oF tHiS fAkE LoVe" (etc.) and there must be a reason they're STILL not stanning -_-. To be blunt, they're probably annoyed by those... -3- So instead of provoking them further (and possibly feeding their belief that kpop fans are "obsessed"), try to prove their kpophatred wrong??
From my experience, I know that I was sure annoyed by those overplayed lines before I became a fan LOL. Hearing them over and over again made me want to claw my ears out, but then hearing the rest of the song and how the one line blended in with it instantly changed my opinion (for ex. IDOL). To this day though, I still appreciate the other parts of KTL, lovesick girls, & D4 over the chorus pitted against meh lol. I'm aware that I'm not an accurate representation of all stans, but I'm pretty sure being told to stan *with knowledge you already know* is supposed to be irritating (someone else *forgot who* argued that orbits were making themselves look bad by writing "stan LOONA" everywhere, even if some are jOkEs or watev *same for "yOoNGi maRRy mE").
A better example is when I got angry that my friend got our art teacher into "finally" liking BTS when they've only heard title tracks or smth like that- It's great that they thoroughly introduced songs on our playlist and got a new fan, but I found it sus that they had the eXaCT sAmE biAs and always agreed with each other's opinions. It's like my teacher became the SAME stan as my friend (due to my friend being the exposer), advocating spending hundreds on mERcH and almost never disliking any songs. The teacher rarely searched for their own songs too, sticking mostly to our class playlist to share onto their spouse. That is where my "bTs dOeSnT nEeD tHe pRoMo" thought came into place (except this time in a "LOOK AT THE UNDERRATED" way instead of a "promote correctly" way). Our beloved teacher's favorite genre was literally heavy metal, which dreamcatcher (+ many bands) are closer to than ur pOp in kpop...
Like I'm sure one fan doesn't make much of a difference, but I was still sad that I couldn't "promote" dreamcatcher or some superior BSIDES *for the streams* (i wasn't part of the class even though i hungout there so I didn't have access to the playlist). Also.. about that bias... it was Taehyung so I was def biased there because I know I would've been more chill if it was one of the members I'd stanned more before unstanning or one of the more unpopular ones... LMAO (admitting to my inner toxic self, i'm p sure my old army fwend's only one was revolting the idea that "BP becomes more popular than bts" LOL)
That get's to my opinion here... iN mY oPiNioN, I believe that someone is fiNe (lol wtf is dis an evaluation?? lol) if they have immersed in the kpop world for awhile and tried out other groups but still genuinely prefer the popular ones. I'd think otherwise if they just stick to following the popular ones due to their popularity and the fact that they're mainstream without bothering to look at what they could pOTeNTiaLLy like as well. I mean... if that's what they want to do then fiNe... Also, some sTiLL need to keep in mind that it's about music and not possessing or obsessing over members. (Btw I'm one of those believers that stans are only considered "KPOP stans" if they're multistans. If they only stan one group, then they are part of *that fandom* to me LOL)
*back to my own petty story* wE weRe ouR oWn cHiLL fWeNdgRoUp/fAmiLy iN dAt sMaLL aRT cLaSspeRioD... Only that classperiod had the kPoP pLaYLisT period as my class period only played tiktok songs. I couldn't get my titletrack-only kpop stan to listen to bsides anyway because they wouldn't hear a different class's playlist anyway. I GOT TO ADD ONE SONG THO >:>(It's supposed to just be a fun playlist for our class but one other friend of mine had literally said they wanted songs added for us to hear.. like XCOOZ MEH II WANT UU TO HEAR STUFF TOO).
correct me if i'm wrong (i'm not XD) but missing out on everglow, twice, stayc, etc. bsides is just a pure shame (mentioning those groups cuz mah fwend stans them lol)
I never knew I'd internally care sOooOoo much as I always thought I was pretty chill (especially about other's OPINIONS)... I'd actually wanted to slam the "dO uR reSeARcH" argument on the table even though I'd never consider kpop stanning as "work" (that's why it'd make sense for a classperiod playlist to be someone's only daily dose *if only i clda influenced that 😩*). Every time someone else hated on kpop, I just ignored them and let them keep "missing out". But when some teacher decided to worship bts while sharing the same braincell as a student (and hating nothing), I literally went nuts internally... (It actually does make sense to ignore haters instead of telling them to rEsEaRcH though, because that only feeds their sTiGmA against fans as you know they'll never aCTuaLLy research and discover that not all stans are what they believe).

funny how I worship dreamcatcher sooo much but don't purchase merch or vote for them on shows (and only stream)... i should change that for their next comeback~
