the both of them spoke in hushed whispers, discussing how they were going to go ahead with the event. the president and vice-president prefects sat across from each other at the bench table in the school canteen, a notebook and clipboard in front of them. their classes were over and the school was empty, aside from them and their event-organising team who were busy with props and other arrangements at a separate table.

the vice-president, pen in between her fingers and brows furrowed together, pointed at the clipboard and said something, writing in her notebook when the president nodded in agreement. he pointed something else out, maybe an error in her notebook that contradicted the contents of the papers on the clipboard and providing a suggestion to improve. the girl's eyes lit up, indicating her agreement with his idea as he made a good point and she gave him a thumbs up with a smile on her face. the vice-president scribbled something else in her notebook as the president nodded in satisfaction.

a faint smile lingered on his lips as he watched her take down her little notes. she had nice, legible handwriting that was always praised by her peers and even some teachers, but the notebook page was currently a mess. he wondered briefly if he was one of the few that got to see this side of her handwriting. he felt his smile widen subconsciously when he saw the previous day's notes from biology class on the same page. she had drawn a line below those neater notes to separate them from today's brainstorming.

that was her style, he noticed. she never started on a fresh page until the one she used was already filled.

she muttered something about the event at him and he registered the joke, letting himself laugh. she smiled, pride swelling in her heart. she liked it when people laughed at something she said. the vice-president finished up her scribbling of important details to remember for the event. she clicked the pen satisfactorily and picked up her notebook from the table to admire her— rather messy handiwork. she had drawn a layout of the school hall and arrows branching out of different places to label who and what goes where.

she hummed, clearly pleased that everything had been figured out. when the vice-president finally looked up at her partner with a smile, her heart skipped when she met his eyes. he was already looking at her with a grin of his own.

"done?" he asked, his tone gentle as usual and warmth radiating from his voice.

"yup! we just need to get confirmation from the teachers and then update the team," she managed a response.

"yes ma'am," he said and smiled again, this time with his eyes as well.

she chuckled nervously, caught off guard by his reply. the two leaders called their team over and the president briefed them about what they had been discussing. he told them that they will confirm with the teachers again, before concluding that any new changes and the finalised plan will be sent to the group chat by night. their team all either nodded or voiced their understanding, and then were dismissed to pack up and go home.

when everyone had left, the president had stayed behind to wait for his assistant and partner to come back from the staff room. she had left to give back the clipboard to their supervising teacher after taking pictures of a few important pages. the vice-president came back to the canteen with a small smile on her face when she saw him, and started packing up her stuff to leave as well. she told him she needed to top-up her water bottle and that he could go home first if he wanted to, but he shook his head and told her he'd wait.

he found himself accompanying her to the bus stop ever since they were assigned to this project and had to stay in school till late in the evening to work on it. he didn't know why he does it, but she didn't seem to mind it so it had become a routine for them.

the two prefectorial board leaders would walk to the bus stop together, often talking about school and their project, and sometimes about themselves or other things in general. they would laugh at something the other said, or let their smiles linger as they gazed at each other with soft eyes while they spoke. you wouldn't be able to help but wonder, if maybe this was their supervising teacher's doing after all.

two students bound to their leadership roles, and maybe, just maybe, also bound to falling in love because of it.
