Hey guys! Sorry for not updating in a while! Hope you enjoy this chapter!
Ava and I hop off the bus, bracing ourselves for what's coming.
School.
California Prep High School looked the same as last year. It was still a big, boring, tan brick building. Students are cluttered around the doorway, stalling, not wanting to go inside. The school logo, a dark blue dolphin that is encircled in red, hangs above the doorway, as if challenging the students to enter. Stupid dolphin, I think to myself and I scowl.
As we walk through the doors, a sense of dread fills me.
What is the new dance teacher doesn't like me as much as the last one did?
What if there really are new kids in my dance class and they knock me out of my spot at the top of the class?
Stop at Cameron, I think to myself, you don't want to start hyperventilating again.whenever I start to become really nervous or freak myself out with negative thoughts, I start to hyperventilate.
I take a deep breath to call myself down. Ava seems to take notice of my sudden mood change.
"Cam are you okay?" She asks tentatively.
"Yeah, I'm fine, it's no big deal." I lie, and my eyes travel back to the ground.
Ava nods, looking unconvinced."Ms. Garner!" A loud authoritative voice exclaims.
Ava rolls her eyes and sighs, while slowly turning around.
There stands Vice Principal Burns. She is a short and stout woman that absolutely hates Ava.
"Yeah Burns?" Ava states, obviously bored.
Vice Principal Burns narrows her eyes before saying, "That would be Vice Principal Burns to you Ms. Garner! This year, to make sure you stay out trouble on the first day, you're on new kid duty. Head down to the office now." She says smirking.
Ava groans but doesn't respond with her usual sarcastic comment.
"Why of course Vice Principal Burns anything you ask." She says turning on her heel to head to the office.
Vice Principal Burns blinks in surprise. I'll admit, I was equally shocked. But then, I saw it.
As Ava turns, I catch a mischievous smile that only I can see which widens as she walks away.
This is a part of her plan.
You see, Ava is one of the many honored troublemakers at the school. Whether it's sassing the teachers or small pranks to brew trouble, Ava is a master. She was only caught a couple of times last year, because they could never prove it was her. I swear she's like a ninja or something. But the best troublemaker moment of the year is when she has her blow-out prank which is what she says, and I quote "the perfect way to start off the year." Every school year, on the first day, she pulls her yearly prank on the Vice Principal, her arch-nemesis.
She hasn't gotten in trouble yet for her yearly pranks because, even though the whole student body knows that it's her, the school board doesn't know who it is. Ms. Burns knows exactly who it is, but she can't prove anything, and no one at school will rat on Ava because they enjoy the prank so much.
Ms. Burns just fell right into her trap.
I silently laugh as Ms. Burns goes off down the hall in the other direction. I wonder what Ava will pull off this year.
I decide to head to my dance class to drop off my bag so I don't have to stuff it in my already-stuffed locker.
I make my way down the hall, dodging couples making out or groups of friends laughing talking. I suddenly feel alone.
I finally arrive at the dance studio, and all of my loneliness and paranoia is melted away. I sigh in content and begin my journey into the locker room in the corner. I put in my combination and hear a satisfying click. After my bag is put safely in my locker, I stroll back out of the locker room.
I remember all of the great times I've had in this room, like that one time--
My thoughts are cut off by the sound of a heavy backpack hitting the ground.
Who has a heavy backpack on the first day of school? I think to myself and slowly turn around.
Standing there is a boy I've never seen before. I guess the rumors were true, I thought to myself as I begin to study him.
He's a guy that looks about my age, but slightly taller. His dark locks, that seemed almost black, fell into his eyes as he bent down to pick up his bag.
He looks up and I can see a faint blush covering his dark tan skin. He has chocolate brown eyes framed by dark eyelashes that any girl in this school would die for. He gave me a shy smile, showing me all of his perfectly straight teeth.
"Oh...um...I'm sorry. Did I interrupt you?" He says, his blush growing as he looks up at me.
"No it's cool I was just thinking," I say distractedly, "so are you new here?"
He bites his lip, a nervous habit of some of my friends, and let's out a nervous laugh.
"Is it that obvious?" He said obviously a little a flustered.
I let out a laugh and smile at him.
"It's all good, it's just that I've never seen you in the studio before. So what's your name mystery boy?""My name is Nick Anderson, and believe me I'm no mystery boy." He laughs, becoming more comfortable in our conversation.
"So are you joining dance then?" I say as I begin to walk near the doors.
"Um yeah, I wanted to come check out the studio later, but had to go to the office for my schedule and I got lost along the way. And that's exactly how I ended up here." He says ending it with a smile.
"You realize that the office is near the parking lot, almost all the way across campus, right? You weren't even close to finding it." I reply trying to contain my laughter. He shrugs he shoulders and smiles, tilting his head slightly.
"I'll help you get there if you want, I wouldn't mind missing homeroom." I say, thinking about how Ava, Sophie, and Sage probably wouldn't miss me.
"That would be amazing," He says flashing his perfectly white teeth and swept his dark hair out of his eyes, "lead on tour guide." He adds on.
"I can tell we are going to be very good friends Mr. Anderson." I state as we begin to our journey to the office.
