The relief I felt at seeing my husband's signature on the dotted line was unimaginable, no one would ever think someone would be so happy to see their husband's signature on divorce papers but to me it brings nothing but relief.
For years I had been stuck in a loveless marriage to a man too full of himself to actually let me go and be happy while he wallowed in his hell, so instead he kept me there with him along with our little boy, Trent.
I had loved my husband once but that changed when he became a cold heartless jerk. He used to love Trent and I that was until he got back in touch with his family.
My husband, Charles Van Der Houston, belongs to one of the most prestigious families of New York City's Upper East Side. His family did not like me because I was not hand selected by them to be their precious Charles' wife but chose to put up with me as my son and I gave them the image of a perfect family.
My mother sat across from me with a concerned expression watching me read through the papers. Trent sat in the chair next to me smiling down at his bowl I was wondering what was going through his thoughts to make him smile.
"Is that what I think it is?" My mother asked.
I looked away from the beautiful little boy sitting next to me to face my mother, "If you mean my divorce papers then yes it is." I said as a huge grin spread across my face.
"I have never seen a woman so excited to be free of her millionaire husband," My mother commented giving me a look of exasperation.
"You of all people know that it is better for me and Trent to be away from him," I exclaimed.
My mother turned serious before saying "Yes I do."
I heard the front door bell signalling we had a visitor but thought nothing of it and carried on eating. Suddenly the door to the dining room opened revealing the devil himself. My soon-to-be-ex-husband I took in his impressive 6ft 2" lean muscled body, his light brown hair fell over his emerald green eyes. It was rather obvious why I fell for him his gorgeous looks and charm, could have even the strongest of women weak at the knees.
His eyes used to be so full of joy and love but now they were stone cold, chilling me to the bones. Trent shrunk into my side scared of his father.
Charles finally spoke after taking in the scene before him, "Isabella I see you received the papers, I expect them to be dealt with promptly. Trent, are you ready to go?"
As his father addressed him Trent clung to my side even more afraid to go with his father. Trent whimpered behind me, "Mummy please don't make me go."
At Trent's exclamation Charles yelled at me "You've turned our son against me now Isabella this is low even for you."
I stood from my seat standing in front of Trent before responding, "Really Charles you think I'm that petty I do not want you in my life but I will not, nor will I ever, take the opportunity away from my son to know his father."
"Well then what the hell is that?" he roared pointing at Trent who was now clinging to the back of my shirt.
I huffed out a breath gaining back control of myself, "You done this to yourself, Charles."
"Yes, I did do this to myself I got rid of my two bit whore of a wife." He tried to goad me.
I took deep calming breathes to keep my cool while prying Trent's hands off my shirt and keeping ahold of his hands showing him it was ok as his trembling slowed a little. I turned around and knelt to Trent's height.
I stroked his cheek with my thumb wiping away his tear tracks before speaking in a soothing tone, "Sweetheart, you have to go with daddy until school starts because mummy needs to go to work."
"But I don't want to go." He replied it broke my heart to see my little boy so reluctant to spend time with his father but I had to be strong he needed a father figure in his life whether he thought so or not.
"I know, sweetheart, but daddy's going to take you to school then I'll pick you up and we can go for some ice cream." I bargained. Trent's hazel eyes lit up at the mention of ice cream and he rushed off to get ready.
I stood and turned around to face my mother and Charles. My mother was still sitting at the table eating as if nothing was happening but Charles still had a grim look on his face.
"I will pick Trent up from school tomorrow and he will spend the weekend with me and I will bring him back Sunday night." Charles stated before turning and heading towards the foyer to wait on Trent.
I got up and followed him wanting to say bye to my little man before I had to leave for work.
"That was what we agreed wasn't it," I snapped at him.
Charles spun around and grabbed my shoulders pushing me up against the wall, "Listen here, you little bitch, if it was up to me Trent would be no where near you or your family" he snarled in my face.
I was about to answer when Trent interrupted me, "Mum, why is daddy holding you like that" at the sound of Trent's voice I pushed Charles away from me before slapping him across the face. His head snapped to the side as the sound reverberated around the room.
"You keep your hands off of me," I whispered harshly getting up in his face.
With that I turned to the door ruffling Trent's hair as I passed him, "Bye, sweetie, have a good day." I said to him.
I reached the door and grasped the handle making sure I had a hard cold expression before turning around to meet my soon-to-be-ex-husband's gaze and saying menacingly "You upset him or touch one hair on his head and I will kill you, Charles, and that's not a threat it's a promise!"
I registered the shocked look cross his face before I opened the door and left him standing there stunned.
