chapter three: danaus plexippus
You step into your driver's seat of the bus and reach underneath to fix your shotgun so that it isn't noticeable. You then slide a black sweatshirt over top of it to blend in with the rest of the seat. Just after you are done, Tsukishima approaches and stands hovering over the shoulder of your seat as you pull out of the lot.
"You could sit in the passenger spot," you say as you eye him from the rearview mirror. "Or go lay down. You look tired."
"I'm not going to leave myself in your care. Besides, I'm not telling you where the store is, just how to get there from here."
"What are you trying to say? Do you really know a place?" you scoff.
"Of course I do. You have my word. You did help me after all," he says a bit warmer than you were expecting from him. Because of that, you decide to drop the conversation. You believe him.
You drive slowly down the streets leading towards the edge of town. You do go out every so often but each time it still breaks your heart to see everything so empty.
"Turn left!" Tsukishima tells you as if he's already said it twice. Perhaps he has, but you were too lost in thought to hear him.
Since there are no other cars on the road and the street lights are still out, you take a sharp left turn without looking. As you turn onto the new road, your eyes suddenly catch on a man right in front of your bus. He's limping across the road and you're driving straight for him. You slam on the brakes as quickly as possible before you get into an accident. The man notices and stops walking. He stands up straight, his wide owl-like eyes burning into your soul.
Tsukishima leans over your shoulder to get a good look at the man in the way. "Go around him or run him over but make your decision quick before he attacks and kills us both."
"He doesn't look like he's going to attack to me," you say to Tsukishima as you inspect the new stranger.
"You don't know that Y/N!" Tsukishima shouts.
"He's injured..." you mutter aloud.
"So? You don't know what... or who injured him! He's bad news, Y/N!" he tries to convince you.
"What's your point? I helped you out when you were injured and we're working out just fine," you tell him without taking your eyes off the stranger who is still frozen in place, probably out of fear.
"I'm being serious, Y/N. We don't know what this guy is capable of!"
You ignore his comment as you put the bus in park and open the doors. "Stay here," you say quietly as you get up. "You can use the gun if it comes down to it."
Tsukishima passes you a mixed look of worry and understanding. "Sure go ahead and get yourself killed but if you do the bus is mine!"
"Okay, it's a deal," you smile. "If anything ever happens to me, the bus is yours to take." You then reach for Tsukishima's hand and shake it. "See ya in a few."
