chapter forty four: melenargia epideme eruca

OIKAWA'S P.O.V.

"A visitor?" I scoff at the guard who visits me in my bunk. "Nah, you've got the wrong person."

"Inmate MA20536, get the fuck up!" the guard shouts at me. I look over at my bunkie who's watching the drama carefully, waiting to see what I'll do as if it's some sort of test of strength or character.

"Yeah, whatever, man," I shake my head. "I'll fucking show you I don't know anybody in the damn visitation room. Hasn't been the whole fucking month I've been in here."

I glance over at my bunkie who has gone back to peeling his orange before I step out to the hallway. The guard and I then walk across the prison toward the visitation room.

"See, I told you. I don't know anybody in-" I begin as I look away from the guard and towards the blue-eyed man waiting for me in a plastic chair with a visitor's name tag slapped across his jacket. "Jesus, fuck."

"Better make a good first impression or you might not get another visitor," the guard laughs as he slaps my back. "Go get 'em, tiger."

I roll my eyes at that asshole guard as I'm pushed toward Kageyama. When I reach him, he stands up for the one hug that's allowed, but I ignore it as I sit down across from his chair, only separated by a small table.

"The hell do you want, Tobio? Come to lecture me? Couldn't Hajime have done that himself?" I scoff.

"It isn't like that," he responds, leaning closer to me. "I just wanted to check up on you."

"Don't act like we're good, you asshole. I know in the end where your loyalties lie. We could've been in this together, but you fucking betrayed me, you-"

"Don't go there," he shakes his head. "I bent over backward for you, Tooru. But I can't do that shit anymore. Not when you're breaking the fucking law."

"Fuck off," I tell him, standing up from my chair and slamming my hands down on the table. "You've got no fucking clue-"

"That's enough inmate!" the guard from earlier shouts across the room. "Settle down or go back to your fucking cell!"

"Yeah alright," I respond as I eye Tobio the whole time. "I'd rather sit in a fucking cell than stay here any longer."

With that, the guard escorts me back. Tobio always came to visit even after that day, but for the longest time, I refused to go. It wasn't until I got really close with my bunkie that I ever saw him again. Maybe it's because I started to settle in, or because I wanted a connection to the outside world like everybody else, but I began to tell him every little thing that happened to me inside the prison.

Tobio always had a concerned look on his face, like everything I told him was absolutely unbelievable. He definitely didn't like my bunkie. Especially not after the things I told him. He constantly told me that he was worried for my safety, but it wasn't until one fateful day when I recognized it.

"Yo! Tooru!" my bunkie shouts at me as I step outside to smoke the cigarette that one of the other inmates had given me earlier that day at work.

"Hm? What is it?" I turn around, asking him. There, I see him with Atsumu on one side and some other guy I've never seen before on the other. The two of them look real nervous about something.

"Where the fuck'd you get that cig, huh?" he continues to yell.

"Dude, keep your voice down."

"Man, I told you to watch out for other products getting spread around in here, not to fucking consume it. How much did that shit cost you?!" he asks, cracking his knuckles.

"Nothing," I shrug. "He gave it to me for free."

"Really? What's he expecting in return then? Didn't take you for the type to hand your ass out for a smoke," he laughs.

"Look, I didn't do nothing wrong," I respond as I take a step back. I can now see that he's got something in the pocket of his gray hoodie.

"Ya know, I know you're new and all, roomie, but you gotta understand somethin' about prison. There are no fuckin' second chances. You screw up once, you're out."

"You kickin' me outta your little gang?" I scoff. My bunkie is a lot bigger than I am. He's probably spent his whole time in here getting buff as shit. I wonder what he got in for. That's the one thing he never told me.

"Something like that," he smirks. "You're going to do exactly like I ask or I'll just have to do something to take care of you. You were never in the family, but I'll give you a shot starting now."

"And why's that? If you just want to know where I got the cig you could just beat it out of me with whatever you got hidin' in your sweatshirt," I roll my eyes at him.

My bunkie steps closer, getting up close to my face and trying to intimidate me. "Nah. I need you for more than that. But you're right, you fuck it up and I will beat whatever I need out of you. Be real with me, got it?"

"Yeah, got it," I scoff.

Just then, I look to the side and see an officer nearby. He seems to be purposefully ignoring our conversation. I know that in order to survive around here, I'm going to need some sort of friends or 'family' as he put it.

Tobio hated the idea. He told me to just turn the guys in and the COs will have to protect me, but I know better than that. I'm the one in here, not him. I'm still learning, but I'm starting to understand how to play his game.

About one month later, the outage happened. Our little 'family' worked well for escaping until one day it all went to shit. Atsumu got in a big fight with my old bunkie and I took off before anything else could happen. I didn't know what had happened to any of them until recently. I never knew Atsumu that well, but he seemed like a decent guy. He was probably just doing the same as I was, playing along with his fucking game.
