chapter twelve: larva
After a long day of sitting in the bus with five others, your group arrives at Monimiaceae.
"Kiyoko, do you know how to get to where you're going from here?" Kuroo asks her.
"What?! We're not just going to drop her off in the middle of the street," you interrupt before Kiyoko gets the chance to speak.
"Well I do," she admits as Tsukishima pulls the bus to the side of the road and puts it in park. "I'm going to my parents' house. I've been there a lot of times before," she adds as she places her hands on the table before her and slowly stands up. You can see just how out of breath she is. There's no way you're letting her walk around the city on her own.
"Could you show us the way then?" you ask. "We will drive you there. I'm not just going to dump you out onto the street."
Osamu groans. "And why not? We don't even know if her parents or anyone will be at this place we're taking her to. We might as well drop her off here and move on. I've got places I want to go too!"
"Well then you can just get off right here," Bokuto shouts at him, earning only a glare back from the silver-haired man.
"Kiyoko, come sit up here with Tsukki," Kuroo tells her as he unbuckles his seatbelt and climbs out of the seat. "You're the only one who knows how to get there."
Kiyoko thanks him quietly and slowly walks over to the front passenger seat. Tsukishima then puts the bus back into drive and continues down the road. Osamu continues to complain for another minute or two but knowing it's five to one, he eventually lets it go.
At last, you arrive at Kiyoko's destination. You and her clamor off the bus and approach the little house. She takes a deep breath before opening the door. Inside is dead silent. Not a good sign.
"Let's split up and see if we can find anyone, okay?"
Kiyoko nods. She walks off into the kitchen on the right while you step into the living room on the left. There, on two of the upholstered chairs are two sleeping men about the same age as you and Kiyoko. One is quite shorter than the other with brown hair except for a few bleached strands in the front. The taller man has what looks like a grown-out buzzed haircut since there is no electricity to maintain it.
As you take a step closer to them, the floorboard creak and they both wake up with angered expressions as though they had only just fallen asleep after a very long time.
"Who the hell are you?" the shorter of the two asks.
"I'm Y/N. I have your, uh, wife Kiyoko!"
"What do you mean you have her? If you're holding her for ransom we might as well just beat the crap outta you and get her back!" the taller one insists as he stands up.
"Yeah! It's two to one!" the other adds.
"No, no, I didn't mean it like that, I-"
Just then, Kiyoko enters the room. "I didn't see any-" she begins just before noticing the two men standing before you.
"Kiyoko, stay away from that girl! I don't know what her intentions are but they aren't good!" the man's voice booms throughout the room. You wouldn't be surprised if the guys on the bus heard him.
"Ryu, it's okay. She's my friend. She and her friends all brought me here. She doesn't want to fight you. Why is that always your first thought?" she sighs.
In Ryu's defense, it kind of does make sense since his wife had disappeared. But anyway, the two guys ignore the quarrel they previously had with you and instead run up to Kiyoko, hugging her probably too tight for a woman who might be pregnant.
After a brief explaination and some introductions, Ryu, who has asked you to call him Tanaka, invites you to bring your friends inside and stay awhile. You do ask he's asked so as to not be impolite, though you have half a mind to keep Osamu locked in the bus by himself.
After everyone gets settled, you ask Tanaka if you could speak privately with him. He shrugs and agrees. The two of you then leave the house to the small outdoor space in the backyard. You then pull the small pregnancy test box from behind your back and show it to him.
"As Kiyoko explained, before the outage I was a doctor. I had noticed some odd signs from your wife since we met and decided it might be important to get her this test." Tanaka blinks blankly and waits for you to continue explaining.
"Anyway, she agreed to take it but didn't want to see the results until she was here with you. Do you want to open it?"
Tanaka, quiet for the first time since you met him, nods and reaches for the box. He opens it carefully and pulls out the slim test on the inside. His eyes widen when he sees the results. "Positive," he whispers. "So then she's pregnant?" he asks.
"Yes," you say with a soft smile, not quite sure if having a baby right now is something they want to celebrate.
"Well, that's amazing!" Tanaka beams. "I can't believe it! We've only just got married recently my head is spinning with all of this good news. I've found her and I'm having a child? I can't think of anything better! But, Y/N, what do we do now?"
"Don't let her out of your sight again," you insist. "She's moving slower and slower and I don't have anything that can really be of much help. If you could find vitamins and make sure she gets enough food and rest, that will definitely help though."
Tanaka nods as he listens carefully to your explanation. Then, you walk back to the rest of the group. You notice Tanaka and Kiyoko go off on their own for awhile, probably to discuss what you just told him. As for Nishinoya, he is blissfully unaware as he jokes around with Bokuto and Kuroo
Before long, you notice Osaka with his crossed arms staring you down as though he was attempting to curse you. It's then you realize it is time to go.
