chapter twenty one: holocaustum papilio
As you walk away from the group, Atsumu catches up to you. The two of you walk away from the bus and down the connecting road. You're both quiet for a little while until he decides to speak up.
"I know you probably wanted to be alone. I'm sorry if I interrupted your walk," he says in a hushed voice.
"No, it's alright. I don't mind. Besides, being alone at night probably isn't the best idea, especially during the end of the world," you attempt to smile back.
"Did it bother you? What Tsukishima said? Is that why you decided to come out here?" he then asks.
"I dunno," you sigh. "I really don't know what to think. Kuroo and I had a disagreement over some things... and ever since then I feel like I can't figure out what's right and what's wrong."
"Some things meaning my brother and me?" he picks up observantly.
You look over at him to take in the look on his face before you decide whether to be honest or lie. He looks very serious so it's safe to say he already knows the truth. "Your brother didn't make a good first impression."
"And neither did I," he sighs. "I'm sorry about that, Y/N. Did I ever tell you what I was doing before you found me?"
"No," you reply as you turn your eyes back to the world in front of you. Making eye contact with him for too long makes your brain short circuit so it's better to avoid it when you can.
"The only person here that I've told this to is Samu. Before this whole 'end of the world' as you put it, I was an automobile mechanic. My life was going well. I met this guy Kiyoomi and I started to really like him. However, the whole time I was doing some shit I shouldn't have and I messed it all up. I was in jail when the power shut off which is why Samu never heard from me."
"Wow, Atsumu, I had no idea you went through all of that. I know what it's like to fuck up a relationship. I'm sorry that happened to you," you relate.
"Look, I understand some of the others don't want my brother and me around and I'm sure that now after you heard all of that, you won't want me here either. But please just tell me I've worn out my welcome before it drives me crazy," he tells you, stopping in place and gently taking you by the arm.
"Everybody already knows my patients come first. If someone has a problem with you or Bokuto or anyone else, then it's on them to leave. My first priority is to take care of my patients, to take care of you, Tsumu. Believe me when I say I want you here. Besides, you already told me you regret the mistake that landed you in jail which tells a lot more about you than the fact that you went there. Please stay."
After you make your long speech, your eyes now gazing back into Atsumu's, you realize the position you're in. Had anyone else come along, you'd probably step away clutching your arm and looking at the group with a flustered expression on your face. But for some reason, you feel safe with Atsumu. You meant what you said, how he handles himself is more important than knowing he was in prison.
"Okay, then I will," he smiles, his hand traveling up your arm and eventually landing on your cheek. Now more than ever your entire face burns in anticipation. You've always found Atsumu attractive, and by no means are you tied down to anyone else. You have no reason to reject him if he tries to make a move.
Atsumu tilts your head to the side, his eyes peering down to your lips. You watch as he slowly leans closer to you. You wonder if he can feel how fast your pulse is.
You feel absolutely helpless as you wait for what feels like decades before he kisses you. Finally, when he does, he's quite soft, but then a surge of intensity grows as you wrap your arms around his neck. You cling to him as though he's the only thing around you that isn't spinning. Your whole world fades into nothingness.
Perhaps Atsumu could feel the shivers throughout your body like a shockwave, because he pulls away just an inch before whispering, "If you want me to stop, just say so."
Of course, too dazed by the idea of him kissing you, you don't give him an immediate response.
Atsumu brushes his lips against your cheek. "I'm waiting for an answer. I'm not going to do it again until you tell me you want me t-" he begins just as you pull him down to you. His words are completely lost against your mouth. You knot your fists around his neck, pulling him even harder against you. He groans softly and kisses you back deeper.
There the two of you stand, alone in the middle of a dark road, still kissing until you're both out of breath. Eventually, Atsumu pulls away and you can't help the embarrassing, child-like smile that grows across your face. God, you almost have to fight off saying 'thank you'.
"Ready to go back?" he asks as he watches you attempt to cover your smile with an even worse frown.
"Yeah, ready."
On the walk back, the two of you have idle chit chat about unimportant things until you find yourself standing outside of the bus as though he just walked you home and you're delaying a goodbye. But it eventually does come around seeing as how everybody's already inside their tent or in the bus and there's not a single sound. Man, how long were you kissing this guy for?
"I'm glad we went on that walk, Y/N," he smiles politely. "Felt nice to talk to someone. I mean, like, an honest talk."
"Same here," you nod. "I'm glad we got the chance."
"And, you know, for everything in between."
"Mhm," you reply, stumbling over your words. "Thanks for that."
"What?" he chuckles. "Why are you thanking me for that?"
"Huh? No, I-"
Atsumu cuts you off as he steps closer to you and places his hand around the backside of your head. He leans your head back almost like before, but when he leans in, he stops just short of reaching your lips.
"You're welcome, beautiful. See you in the morning."
With that, he kisses you once more. Seeing as it's a goodbye kiss, he's much slower and gentler than before, but either way, it leaves you wanting more when you watch him walk away.
