Dream got permission! He was ecstatic.
He hopes that Nightmare is still there.
And so he jumps into the portal in record time.
He arrives at Outertale. The portals always work.
Outertale was gorgeous, as always.
But right now isn't the time.
Right now, he needs to find Nightmare.
He knows Nightmare is a kid, so he'd go to Toriel.
So he walked into the cavern(even though he could teleport).

Nightmare was having his breakfast.
Food was heaven here; he thanked every second of it.
"Would you like more, my child?"
"No, thank you, mom."
And now, he was about to ask the fateful question.
"Toriel, can I go out for a bit?"
Toriel smiled.
"Of course, you can, my child. Just be careful!"
Nightmare beamed and thanked her, then ran out.
Dream was running towards the Cavern entrance, increasing his speed every second.
Nightmare was dashing towards the exit, hoping to find some hope in the plains.
Both of them were thinking of one thing.
Their brother.
"OOF!"
And they both crashed into each other.
"I'm sorry! I wasn't looking!"
"It's alright, miste-"
It took a while, but they realised that the person they bumped into...
was each other.

"D-Dream?"
"Nighty?"
They stared at each other for a while before Dream made the first move.
And by the first move, I mean leap on Nightmare and give him the multiverse's most vigorous hug while crying tears of joy kind of move.
"Nighty, I missed you so, so MUCH!"
Nightmare smiled. At that moment, he felt perfect. His brother was back; he didn't have to know about their mother, and everything was OK...
What more was there?
Nightmare hugged him back too.
His touch on Dream was gentle and comforting, just as Dream remembered it.
"I missed you too, Dream. Happy 600-year birthday, Dream. I'm sorry I missed so many of them."
Dream was on the verge of tears. He didn't have to apologise! It wasn't his fault; it was the monstrosity!
"It's not your fault!"
"Yes, it is. And when we get back, I'll plan you the best birthday for next year, k?"
Dream knew it was pointless to argue. Besides, he missed Nightmare's special cake.
"OK, brother!"
"There's my happy Dream. Stay that way, even when I'm gone, OK?"
Dream got a little worried.
Was Nightmare saying...
he was going to DIE soon?
Dream shook it off. It was probably nothing.
"OK, brother! I'll try!"
Maybe he was on borrowed time all along... Perhaps it was all for nothing...
But I'll try anyway.
