It was finally Friday night, and I was just finishing my last minute touches to my Halloween costume. I didn't have very much time before Oliver said he was going to pick me up, so I needed to work fast. Isabel came into the room with the white platform heels I had asked her for, and smiled as she looked me up and down. I was dressed as Cher from clueless, wearing the yellow plaid outfit she wore in the movie. "You look so adorable!" Isabel commented on my outfit as I slipped on the heels. It was her idea to wear this outfit, and it took almost the whole week for me to finally give in. "I don't look stupid?" I asked as I looked myself over in the full length mirror. "Far from it. You're going to be the best dressed girl at that party." She assures me. I heard a car door shut, and quickly ran downstairs. I was hoping to get to the door first before my mom, but she was quicker than I was. Oliver was already standing in the doorway talking to her when I came down. He looked over at me, a large smile on his face as he looked me up and down. "You really went all out." He tells me excitedly. He was dressed in the light blue tuxedo from the movie Dumb and Dumber. Before I could comment on his costume he began talking about how his best friend Dean was going to be wearing the orange tuxedo to complete the look. "You guys are so cute. I need to get a picture before you leave!" My mother rushes over to the kitchen to grab her phone, then rushes back. "Do we have to?" I protest. She nods her head and we both pose for a couple pictures. "Alright, that's enough." I told her. She gives me an annoyed look, but puts her phone in her pocket. "You two kids have fun." She tells us with a bright smile. We both say goodbye and I follow Oliver out to his car. The familiar smell of cologne filled my nostrils, it made me think about the last time I was in his car, and how he kissed me. "Do you want to choose what we listen to?" He asks, handing me his phone so I could choose a song. I hate being in charge of the music, and I hoped he wouldn't judge me for whatever song I picked. It took me a few minutes to choose a song, but I finally settled for Second Chance by Shinedown. I noticed a lot of the songs on his phone were rock. He looked surprised by my choice in song as it started to play through the car's speakers. "Interesting..." He spoke, glancing at me with a smile. "What? Is it a bad song?" I asked. It was one of my favorite rock songs. "I just wasn't expecting you to pick a rock song." He replied. "My sister's fiancé listens to rock whenever we drive somewhere. I guess I've just gotten used to it over the years." I explained. "Is rock your favorite genre of music?" I ask. "Yeah, I like to listen to it when I workout or get ready for a game." He replies, singing along to the chorus of the song. I felt pretty proud of my song selection as I watched him sing. He didn't have a bad voice, and I started to wonder why he has never tried musical theater before. Once the song ended, a Backstreet Boys song started playing next. He looked over at me in embarrassment. "You don't have to be embarrassed, I actually really like the Backstreet Boys." I assure him. We both start singing along to the song, and laughing at each other as we do so. It just felt so natural being with him, even though I still felt like I barely knew him. For eleven years I was always too afraid to speak to him, not because he scared me but because he was just so good looking and popular. I didn't think he would find me interesting, or fun. If anyone saw us right now, they would guess that we've been friends forever. We pulled up to a large house, the driveway was packed with cars so we had to park along the street. It looked like the entire school was at this party. "Who's house is this?" I asked as we began walking towards the party. "Bentley, he's the captain of the football team." Oliver replied. Bentley was one of those guys who is just super extreme and rowdy, and loud. He's a senior so I've never had any classes with him, but from what I've seen during school events or even throughout the hallways, he is a huge clown. When we got inside, I followed Oliver over to where Bentley was standing with a few other guys from the football team. His best friend Dean was standing there as well, wearing his orange tuxedo. They gave each other one of those bro handshakes that ended in a weird hug. Nobody paid any attention to me standing next to Oliver, but I wasn't surprised that I was yet again invisible. I bet if I had been dressed as Sandy though, they would have noticed me then. Oliver didn't even notice when I slipped away and walked over to some of the drama students I had noticed were standing across the room. It was so fun seeing everyone all dressed up. April was dressed in scrubs, and then there was Dylan. He was dressed in probably the best costume at the party. Captain Jack Sparrow. He went all out too, and he actually looked really similar to Johnny Depp. He glanced over at me and looked at my costume, but didn't say anything. "Hey Dani. Did you come here with Oliver?" April was quick to ask. She watched Oliver across the room as him and Dean posed for some pictures together. He still hadn't noticed that I slipped away. "Yeah I guess." I replied. She gave me a look of approval. "We were just playing truth or dare, do you want to play with us?" Trina asked from beside April. I hadn't even realized she was standing there. She was dressed like Katy Perry, and was wearing a bright blue wig. "I guess so, I've never played before." I admitted to them. "But you've heard of it right? So you know how it works?" She asked. I nodded my head, and April quickly asked "Dani, truth or dare." I was hesitant to answer. "Truth." I replied, nervously awaiting for what she was going to ask me. "Do you have a thing for Oliver?" She asked, everyone looked at me eagerly as they awaited my answer. "Um... I don't know, maybe?" I replied, my face turning red. They all laughed, then moved onto the next person. Once it finally came back to me, I decided to be bold and chose to do a dare. It couldn't be that bad. "I dare you to go over to Oliver and get him to dance with you, then halfway through the dance get him to make out with you..." Trina spoke. My eyes went wide, and all of a sudden I wasn't feeling very bold anymore. I looked over at him, he was still surrounded by all of his friends. I knew if I didn't do the dare though, they would all make fun of me for it. "Wait..." Trina spoke as I was about to walk away. "Make it look sexy." She winked at me and I felt my face burn. I slowly walked towards Oliver, trying to mentally plan how I wanted it to go down in my head. He was leaning up against the wall talking with his friends, his eyes looking over at me as I approached. Neither of us said anything as I reached out and grabbed his hand. He gladly took my hand and I pulled him towards the middle of the room where people were dancing. Luckily my Mother placed me in dance classes when I was in middle school, so I knew a couple of good moves that would surely get his attention. Halfway through the song, just like Trina instructed, I leaned forward and started kissing him. He didn't protest as I felt his hand reach up and rest on the back of my neck. We continued to kiss for what seemed like five minutes but it wasn't nearly as long as I had hoped. The song came to an end and I pulled away from him. He stared down at me like he was intrigued by my sudden confidence. I walked away from him and made my way back over to where everyone was standing. They were all smiling as I made my way back, some of them even hooted and hollered. If I looked into the mirror I'm sure my face would be bright red. I hadn't even noticed Dylan wasn't standing there anymore until someone made a comment about it. From the corner of my eye I watched Oliver go back over to his friends where they were all watching me like I was some mystical creature. I didn't know whether I should be flattered or embarrassed.
