Chapter 10
"Sorry," Riley said to Connor, panting. Jeffany and him had left the house as soon as they had received Connor's message. Riley had needed to convince Jeffany to go as Jeffany's parent would be angry if they turned up and she wasn't home. After a few assurance and considerations, Jeffany had thought of leaving her mother a message instead.
To: Mom
I will be staying
on the apartment for
tonight. I left the keys
on the window. The crew were getting ready for the concert. Connor was carrying a load out of the hotel room when he said, "You left without asking and you didn't tell anyone where you'd go."
Riley was following his trail. "Sorry," he said again. "But..." He scratched the back of his head and sighed. "Oh, forget it," he said, hauling Jeffany into the subroom where Riley and his siblings had played with wands.
"He's unbelievable!" Riley said exasperatedly, pacing on the floor, when Jeffany and him were finally inside the room. "Why can't he understand what I want?!"
"Riley," Jeffany said, holding Riley in his hands. "Calm yourself."
Riley crossed his arms and looked at Jeffany sternly, but after a few moments, he softened his gaze and heaved a sigh. "I just can't believe he wants me to lock myself in here and stop sneaking. I mean, it's not the usual him. He's very supporting, you know?"
"Maybe he's just protecting you," Jeffany said. She was clueless, but she thought that by saying this, Riley might feel better.
"Protecting from what?"
Jeffany got out of ideas. What am I gonna answer? Oh, please, God! Help me. "Ummm... have you told him about... the snatcher?"
Riley looked at the ceiling and put his index finger and thumb on his chin, brushing his invisible beard. "Hmmm. Maybe that's the reason," Riley considered, nodding approvingly.
Jeffany smiled and pulled Riley in a hug. "Maybe we should let him know who protected you."
Riley brushed her hair and put his chin on Jeffany's forehead. "He knows."

"This is it, Jeff!" Riley hugged Jeffany tight and lifted her up, twirling around until they got dizzy. Jeffany was laughing. She was wearing a white shirt with a Before You Exit logo in front, and the large numbers 9 and 5 on her back. At the top of it was Riley's surname---McDONOUGH.
"I'm so excited! I can finally hear you singing!" Jeffany giggled as Riley put her down.
"I'm getting nervous," Riley said, acting as if he was a little shaky.
"No, your not," Jeffany said, smiling.
"Just give me a kiss and all of this will be gone."
Jeffany looked at him with squinted eyes, one eyebrow cocked. This guy is indeed flirty. She laughed on her mind.
"Please," Riley pleaded, putting on his puppy eyes with his hands pressed together as if praying.
Jeffany rolled her eyes playfully and looked at Riley. "Okay, okay."
Riley closed his eyes and leaned his face toward Jeffany. His face was handsome, like all the possible perfect features for a man was put into one mask that he wore permanently. He looked surreal but truthful at the same time. The way his lashes drew shadows under his eyes. The way his lips smiled without parting. The way his face shaped as he relaxed. He's so perfect like no any other.
