Summary:  It's Hawkins almost 3 years later, Steve (and Joyce) is now Officer Harrington, and the now 17-year-old kids are making up for time missed fighting off evil and grieving by getting into typical teenage trouble- including trying to break into school for some elaborate prank Steve doesn't care about enough to hear. Also a specific moment in the middle is based of a random image I saw on Instagram where someone called 'under arrest' 'under the rest' and it was funny

"Wait, where are you going? Hey, Steve!"

Steve pauses and turns around, already halfway out the door of Hawkins Police Station as he faces Robin who was just about to enter. "Guess which group of 'rowdy seniors' was caught trying to break into the high school again," he answers, sighing, hearing Robin follow him as he briskly walks to his car.

"Oh my god, again? I can't even remember what they were doing last time. This isn't part of the elaborate end of year prank Max was telling me about the other day, is it? God it probably is, right? How much do you know? Also! Nancy told me to stop by and ask if there was any good news for the paper that I could turn into an article since the sexist assholes she can't fire aren't any help. She tells me I'm the most creative worker but I think she's just biased—"

"Robin," Steve says, interrupting Robin's rambling, already at his car and getting inside, keeping the door open briefly to talk. "I have to go."

She gives him a sly smile, opening her mouth to ask a question he already knows the answer to. "No, you can't come for a ride this time. Sorry, but last time it was just Max and Lucas that needed to be driven back. I might need to drive more this time."

Robin pouts, before giving him an intense quizzical stare. "Are you okay? I know you hate having to deal with them but you're usually at least more positive about it, I guess? You seem off? Nightmare?" And of course she's able to notice how different he is. They've both become experts at sensing even the slightest mood changes in the other from the sheer amount of time they spend together. Years of hanging out has made it possible, and though sometimes it's a good thing, Steve just itches to leave, not wanting to admit what's wrong.

"Master of Puppets was playing on the radio station inside earlier, for some unknown reason. I swear they never used to play those kinds of songs." He answers honestly, not wanting to lie to one of his best friends— 'platonic soulmate', Robin once called them in an attempt to think of something different when he claimed that Dustin was also his best friend. She looks at him now, giving him a sympathetic look. It's been 3 years now, but every time he hears the song he still thinks of Eddie. He listened to it for a while, and then ended up being unable to stand it. Weirdly enough, he still listens to a whole bunch of Metallica songs and other things he knew Eddie listened to. It's something only Robin knows. Really, Master of Puppets is the only song he actively avoids and that instantly brings his mind back to Eddie.

"Anyways," he says again, trying to seem a bit more positive and forcing a smile to his face, "I really have to go now. Talk to Hopper when he gets back. Some old couple lost one of their cats, I think. I'm sure you can turn that into an interesting article for the newspaper." He shuts the car door much to Robin's protest. He faintly hears her starting to talk about how that's the most boring thing she could possibly write about and she refuses to write about a missing cat unless Nancy specifically tells her to.

Driving out of the car park, he genuinely grins to himself, rolling his eyes. He knows despite her refusal, if she really wanted to, Robin could make even a column about a missing cat interesting to read. Shortly after everything had happened with Vecna, half of the staff at the already struggling Hawkins Post left as part of the large group of residents that were fleeing the town. Nancy had swiftly managed to get a job back there, her hard work amidst the lack of enough staff eventually led her to becoming the best writer there and eventually the new Chief Editor. Not long after that, Jonathan had moved back from living in California with Argyle — the rest of the Byers had moved back almost immediately but he'd opted to stay due to college — and became the photographer again.
