As we pull up to a secluded area, there are cops going up the driveway. At the top of the driveway, I notice a blue SUV. So, it was my father that has been following me. We park at the bottom that way we can slowly walk up behind the police officers. One of the officers, which according to his badge seems like the chief, pulls my mother to the side.
"We have confirmation that he does indeed have a hostage. We have no idea if he is armed or not but aren't moving in until we have that information. He seems very discombobulated and might even be under the influence of alcohol. It's amazing how he drove all the way over here without crashing." Two other police officers come over to us with bullet proof vests and little hidden mics. Collin and my mother put them on but there isn't one for me.
"Where is mine?" Collin turns to look at me.
"You are not going anywhere near that cabin. Not as long as you are carrying our child." My mother whips her head around to us.
"Your what?!"
"Collin, out of all the things you've told her you didn't tell her this?"
"No. I wanted to make sure everything was okay with it before saying anything."
"Adelaide, you're pregnant?"
"Yeah, I am."
"Congratulations honey." She pulls me in for a huge hug and I can see Collin smiling out of the corner of my eye. That moment was quickly ruined by a man screaming.
"I WANT TO SEE MY FUCKING DAUGHTER!!!" His words are slurring, and he sounds extremely drunk. Staring up at the cabin, on the second floor there is a balcony. He walks out onto the balcony and looks down at everyone. Collin moves me behind a cop car so I'm not in sight.
"I'LL LET THIS OLD BITCH GO ONCE I SEE MY DAUGTER." Grandma. I look at the police chief and can't believe what I'm about to say.
"Let me go see him." They all turn around and look at me in disbelief. Collin is the first one to speak.
"Addy, I said you aren't going anywhere near there. He could hurt you or even worse, kill you. I'm not about to lose you and my child in the same day. It's a no."
"Collin, I appreciate your concern for me and our child, but my grandmother is in there. She doesn't deserve this. She's taken care of me my whole life and it's only right that I do the same for her. I will not let her go through this any longer."
"Addy-"
"Collin, I know what I'm doing. Please. I'm trusting you so it's your turn to just trust me." He sighs and turns to the chief.
"Get her a vest, put a mic on her, and send someone in right behind her. And I swear, if anything fucking happens to her, I am going in and killing that man myself." The chief hesitates for a minute then calls one of his guys over. They bring over another vest and stick a mic on the inside of my shirt and a tiny little earbud in my ear.
"When you walk up the driveway, one of my guys will be right behind you. Be very careful of what you say because with the state he is in right now he could take anything you say the wrong way."
"Okay, I got it." Before walking up the driveway, Collin pulls me towards him.
"Adelaide. I should have told you the minute I knew. I'm sorry and I know you might never forgive me, but I need you to know. I love you so much. You are the light of my life and I never meant for this to get this far." All of a sudden, I feel bad for ever getting mad at him. I know he was just trying to protect me and for that I am so thankful for. If there's one thing I do know, it's that I love him too. I have for a while and even more seeing how happy he gets with knowing he's going to be a father. His hands are cradling my face, so I put mine over his.
