Chapter 18

“OH MY GOD!” Taylor shouted while we were in the grocery shopping for last minute Christmas dinner items. I told her about the kiss and here she is, mumbling “Oh my God” repeatedly.

“Shh!” I shushed her and glared at her as I got a can of cranberry sauce. “People are staring.”

“Sorry.” She mumbled then brightened again. “I can’t believe it. He kissed you. He kissed you! And you kissed him back!”

I groaned. My mind filled with thoughts of what happened six days ago. I’ve been avoiding Liam since then, not really wanting to talk about it. I’ve talked to Harry but it was on the phone. Tonight’s going to be like a reunion for us, an awkward reunion. “Forget about it. I have a boyfriend!”

“Then why did you kiss him back?” Taylor asked with her eyebrow arched and her eyes with a mixture of teasing and seriousness.

“I-I-I…” I stuttered. I didn’t know. Was it because deep inside, I liked him? No. No way. “I don’t know. It was probably a spur of the moment thing.”

“U-huh. Keep telling yourself that, Bree.” Taylor said as I paid at the counter. We got the bags and walked back to my house. The grocery store is just two blocks from my house so we got back in no time.

“Could you call Niall and tell him to come over now? He has to cook the turkey.” I said, as we neared the house.

“I texted him half an hour ago. But you should call Louis. He makes awesome lamb chops.” Taylor said and I agreed. We walked up the steps to the front door and noticed something. It was slightly ajar. I froze in my tracks.

“Taylor.” I said, pointing to the door. He eyes widened.

“Be as quiet as you can when we enter, ok?” I nodded to what Taylor said. I opened the door slowly and got in. Taylor and I put the bags down as quietly as possible so the brown paper bags won’t make a sound. I got an umbrella from the front door while Taylor got a bat that was lying around. Then suddenly we heard a loud crash from the kitchen. I looked at Taylor with an alarmed expression. She gestured for me to go on. We tiptoed to the kitchen as fast as we can. We stood behind the wall before we went in.

“Ok, on three.” Taylor whispered.

“One.”

“Two.”

“Hah!” We exclaimed as we jumped into the kitchen. The invader, who was looking in the fridge, jumped in fright. His head hit the top of the fridge then he turned around, giving us a look of him.

“Niall?!” We exclaimed, shocked.

“Yeah.” He mumbled, rubbing the spot where he was hit. “If I wasn’t busy getting something in the fridge, I wouldn’t have been scared.”

“Why are you already here?” I asked, relieved he wasn’t a burglar.

“I got here early and nobody was here. I got bored of waiting so I tried to find an extra key. Turns out it was under the potted plant.” He said, waving the key in his hand.

“You gave us a heart attack, Niall.” Taylor said as she took off her coat. “For the second time!” She added, remembering the time when Niall came in the bakery, looking like a criminal.

Niall laughed. “That was hilarious.”

I rolled my eyes. “For scaring us like that – even if you didn’t mean it – you could get the groceries in the living room.”
