Chapter 8

“When I find Styles, I will strangle him!” Brielle said when I showed her the text.

“What do you want to do now?” I asked her as we walked along the boardwalk. She sighed and looked at me. In my mind, I was still thinking of feeding Harry to the crocodiles so I didn’t hear what Bree said.

“Hello? Liam?” She asked, still waving her hand.

“Oh, sorry.” I mumbled.

“As I was saying,” She started and we continued on walking. “We could go on a ride.”

“And I know just what ride we should go on.” I said and I pulled her towards the Haunted House.

“Liam, you are not making me go on that.” She said as we were standing in front of the eerie ride.

“Don’t tell me you’re scared!”

“I’m not! It’s just…”

“Bree’s afraid of ghosts!” I teased her as we moved nearer to the entrance.

“No, I’m not scared!” We moved a bit so we’re now 3rd in line.

“Oh my god! Please don’t make me go in their!” She said and pulled my arm like a little kid would.

“Relax! I’m here to protect you.” I said as we were next in line. A few seconds later, we got in the cart thing and buckled our seatbelts. I felt Bree inch closer to me and clutched my arm as we slowly entered the dark house.

-----

“That was so scary!” Bree said as we walked away from the ride. It was scary. But I didn’t even notice it. I was too busy laughing at Bree while I held her in my arms as she screamed like there’s no tomorrow. One time, Bree almost jumped because she was so frightened. You know, she’s cute when she’s scared and vulnerable like that. Cute? What the heck am I thinking?!

“Now, I’ll have nightmares.” She complained.

“Don’t worry, love. We could probably sleepover at your house. So, you won’t be alone later.” I said and put my arm around her just to tease her. She quickly shrugged it off.

“What are—Hey, Liam. Let’s go on the Wonder Wheel.” She quickly said and she pulled me towards the big Ferris wheel. Ok?

There weren’t a lot of people so we got in right away. We sat together and buckled the seat belts. We slowly went up, leaving the ground below. She rested her head on my shoulder as we enjoyed the view. What? Why?

It was quiet until we gradually reached the top. “Phew! That was close.” She said and scooted away from me.

“What was?” I asked in bewilderment.

“I saw 2 or 3 paparazzi following us. So, I pulled you here.” She said smiling proudly. “That’s why I put my head on your shoulder and did all those things.”

All of that was a joke? So the ‘being scared of horror rides’ was just an act? It was just some way of tricking the paparazzi of thinking we were good friends? Good. So, that also means that calling her ‘cute’ was just pretend too, right?

I was still thinking about it when the Ferris wheel suddenly stopped and we were at the very top.

“What the?”

“There are some technical difficulties, people! Please stay calm and don’t get off the seats!” A man from below shouted with a bullhorn.

“Great! Just great! I’m stuck here with you for God knows how long!” Brielle exclaimed and threw her hands up in the air for emphasis. I resisted the urge to roll my eyes. She didn’t mean that in a joke-y way but meant it in a mean way.
