THE INBESTIGATORS (EZRA'S LOVE STORY)

(2) CO-WORKERS

It's been two days since The Inbestigators Anniversary.

Today, I'm at the office with Maudie and Kyle.

Ava is with one of her friends, I can't remember which one but she'll be gone for the whole afternoon.

I was editing one of our video blogs when Kyle called for me.

Kyle: Hey, Ezra.

Me: What?

I asked without looking away from my computer.

Kyle: We're out of food.

Maudie was on the couch working on a school project when she said...

Maudie: That's not good.

Kyle: Can I have money so I can buy some food for the office?

Ezra: Sure, but you can't just buy food for yourself.

I grab a pen and a notepad and write a few names of food items.

I wrote: Bread, Mayonnaise, Baloney, Lettuce, Tomatoes.

I stand up and hand Maudie the pen and notepad.

Me: Do you have anything you might want?

Maudie: I'd like some salmon and peanut butter.

Me: Stop trying to make me eat it.

She writes down Salmon and Peanut Butter.

She hands me the pen and notepad.

Maudie: Here you go.

I go to the mini safe we have and bring out our money jar.

I take out a fifty dollar bill and closed the jar and safe.

I rip out the list from the notepad and handed it to Kyle along with the fifty dollars.

Ezra: Make sure to keep the receipt.

Kyle: Yeah, sure.

Kyle took the list and the money and left the office.

I was about to return to my seat when I just realised that Maudie and I were alone in the office.

The last time we were alone was the party two days ago.

I tried my best to get back to work and ignore it but I couldn't focus.

I keep glancing at Maudie from time to time.

As time passed I could feel my heart beat louder and faster.

I didn't have any problems before what's so different from today.

While my head was spiraling Maudie asked me a question.

Maudie: Ezra did you finish the school project yet?

The school project is to find a topic that interests you and research it and write an essay.

Me: I'm halfway done.

Maudie: Do you want to work on our projects together? It's due in two days, you should prioritize it. The video blog isn't that urgent.

Me: Well, umm I uhh

I hesitated and stuttered, my mind went blank.

Me: Yeah, sure.

I didn't want to reject her.

She brought her pile of papers to my desk and sat in one of the office chairs nearby.

She sat pretty close to me and I could feel my body temperature rise.

Maudie: I remember that you're doing your project on your computer. I'm doing it in paper because I like writing better than typing.

I look at Maudie's papers and I noticed that while her handwriting was messy the overall format looked great.

Me: The format on yours looks great.

Maudie: Thanks

She tucked her hair behind her ears and started writing.

We discussed each other's topic and helped each other try to make our projects better.

It was fun being around Maudie.

We were still talking about the project when Kyle entered the office.

Kyle: I'm back!

He placed the bag full of food he was carrying onto the kitchen counter.

Maudie: Hi Kyle.

Ezra: Hey.

I felt relieved that we weren't alone anymore but I also felt sad.

Kyle: Anything fun happen?

Maudie: Not really, we were working on our school project.

Kyle: That's great. Umm quick question. Was I supposed to do it too?

Ezra: Yes, Kyle. Our teacher Mrs. Moore assigned it to us three days ago.

Kyle: Umm. Would you guys mind if I asked you to help me work on it from the very beginning?

Maudie: Sure thing Kyle. Let's move to the bigger table so me and Ezra can help.

After that we helped Kyle with his work until it was time to go home.

I was feeling kind of weird earlier, I might have a fever or a cold.

I should look it up later.
