Chapter One - Fate's Vow To Never Wear A Swimsuit

"The poets have been mysteriously silent on the subject of cheese." - Gilbert K Chesterton

"Elliott!" Maria shouted from the other side of the door. "Hurry up! I wanna go swimming before it gets too dark!"

"Jeez, I'm done, I'm done." I said, opening the door and turning around. "But can you tie my top on?" I gestured towards the bikini top I was currently wearing.

"And then we can go?" She questioned excitedly.

"Yes, then we can go." I said with an exhausted tone. "Why did you wake me up at three in the morning to go swimming, anyways?"

"Don't ask stupid questions, Ellie."

"Are you done yet?" I started tying my hair up into a topknot.

"Yep." She looked at me with a devilish smirk. "I'm driving."

"Aha, no."

"Aha, yes."

"No.

"Yes.

"No!"

"Yes!"

"Fine." I gave into her, throwing her the keys. "But as soon as you start swerving around the road, or get scared, I'm driving. Okay?"

"Yeah, yeah. Whatever!" She waved me off, skipping out the door, flips flops in hand.

She squealed excitedly when she got into the car, placing her hands on the wheel and jumping up and down in her seat.

I chuckled a bit, stepping into the passenger seat of the rusty red truck.

"You know how to drive a car, right?" I asked cautiously.

"Maybe." She replied, shoving the key into the ignition. "I'm just gonna drive now."

"Elliott, are we there yet?"

"Just turn left here, and we're there." I closed the GPS app on my phone, dumping it back into my bag.

After she made the turn, we drove down a hill, the shimmering waters now in sight. I directed her to park in the sand, and soon enough, we were dipping our toes into the lukewarm water.

The water wasn't that cold, and the air wasn't either. Everything was like what summer would be like, except that one creepy feeling. The feeling where you practically know you're being watched, but you just keep telling yourself that it's just a trick of your head.

Yeah.

That feeling.

"Hey, Elliott!" Maria shouted, breaking me from my thoughts. "You gonna get in? I'll pull you in if you don't!"

"Oh, yeah. Sure." I cracked a fake smile, wrapping my arms around myself as I stepped into the water.

I looked around in the trees, before shaking my head and swimming up to Maria, splashing her with water.

"Ellie!" She giggled, shielding her face. When she splashed back, I ducked underwater. For almost a second, I heard the sound of someone lighting a cigarette.

I shook it off, swimming behind Maria. I jumped out of the water, tackling her from behind.

After our little splash-fest, we sat in the shallow water that went up to our ankles.

"Hey, Maria?" I spoke up after a short silence.

"What's up?"

I looked down at my knees, smirking to myself. I got up, wiping the grin off my face.

"What's wrong, Ellie?" She asked again, worry evident in her voice.

I took her hand in mine, walking over to the steep rocks on the deep side of the small lake, where there was a cove underneath the rocky ledge.

"Cannonball!" I shouted, pulling her into the water with me. My foot caught on a tiny rock, scraping my legs as I fell into the cove, headfirst. My head hit the bottom, feeling as if it split open.

But suddenly, time stopped, and the pain went away. Not the even the trees dare move, the water stopped entirely as well, and Maria was in mid-step towards me, her face contorted into shock and worry. But for some reason, I could still move.

"Hey there, girlie." A voice said from behind me. I turned around, coming face-to-face with slumped figure, who was seemingly floating in air. He had short-cut, brown hair and wore an oversized hoodie, skinny jeans, and a pair of high tops. Another weird thing about him, was the he was carrying dual pistols on either side of his jeans, and a pair of thin, long swords. On the the hilt, one read 'Lagi' and the other read 'Soali.'

"W-who are you?" I questioned, my voice wavering.

"I'm your new bestie." He placed a finger under my chin, lifting it up and leaning forward. "But more like, you're mine now."

I gulped, not knowing what to say to that. Well, first of all, it's creepy. But I couldn't say that, because he'd probably stab me and shoot me, via those guns and swords.

"Why are you doing this?" I started shaking, but at least feeling a little bit of relief when he released me and leaned back.

"You might think I'm against you, Elliott. But guess what? I'm the good guy. And I guess you'll just have to find out how and why." He smirked, before poofing to who-knows-where.

And then guess what happened?

Then, I woke up.
