Lori and I sit by the campfire cooking a pot of various edible food items, ranging from mushrooms to canned beans on the side. We're waiting for someone (Daryl) to bring home the meat. Everybody else is doing their chores that Shane had given us to do, Dale however is on top of the RV keeping a look out for anything out of the ordinary, if anything is ordinary these days.
"Any luck?" I look up to see Amy walking up to us with the red bucket she took earlier to scavenge.
As Amy starts to tip the bucket into a small tin bowl in Lori's hand, she asks "How do we tell if they're poison?" she looks over to Lori with a questioning gaze. There is only one way to tell, eat it! But none of us are willing to do that. Amy sets the bucket down next to Lori's feet and grabs a spoon from the bunch we have set out.
"Uh, there's only one sure way I know of." Lori says while picking at the mushrooms and rubbing dirt off some of them.
Amy begins to stir the pot; she looks back at Lori with raised eyebrows. "Ask Shane when he gets back?" Amy then sits next to me and gives me one of her dazzling smiles. Don't think Shane knows either.
Lori then places the mushrooms down "Yeah, you've got it." Lori picks up the red bucket and begins to stand.
"Thank you." Amy says like a child getting the ok to play outside or getting their favourite treat. Gosh, she's so young and still carries that innocence a child would.
Lori cleans out the remaining mushrooms from the bucket as she slowly starts to walk away, she looks towards Dale who is still on top of the RV "Dale, I'm heading out!" she looks towards Carl, "Sweetheart, I want you to stay where Alex and Dale can see you, okay?"
I look over at Lori and give her a reassuring nod, or at least that's what the nod looks like. Carl looks at his mother, seemingly a little bothered that she interrupted his game. "Yes mom." As soon as he's answered his mother he looks away and begins playing again. "You too! Don't wander too far, stay within shouting distance. And if you see anything, holler. I'll come running." Dale shouts from on top the RV, he's always been worried about any of us wanderers.
Quite a few of us are wanderers, myself included, having never been around this side of the wilderness. Lori answers him with a soft "Yes mom." That Dale doesn't seem to hear but Amy and I do, giggling at her response. Amy continues to chuckle at the little quip Lori had given but I stopped having noticed which direction she was heading. Knowing damn well that is the same way Shane went earlier today. I have known for a long time that there is something going on between Lori and Shane, what made me feel sick to my stomach was the fact that Shane was doing his best friends' wife. Sure, he may just be dead but God, he couldn't let the women grieve first. Clearly, she was using him as her way of grieving. A very bad way of grieving if you ask me.
I look away from Lori walking away from us, shaking my head. Instead, I choose to focus my attention elsewhere, "Hey sugar, what are you doing?" Moving to sit with Carl. He shows me his cars and describes what he's playing. I ask if I can join. Carl gladly accepts and we begin playing.
Carl begins to tell me all about his father, how cool he is, that he is a cop and that he's, his hero. He seems to be trying to convince himself, more than me that his father is still alive. I have my doubts, but some of us here have seen worse and come out of it alive. I start to remember my father, how I left him behind just like Carl left his.
Carl soon gets bored of the game and runs off to find Sophia "I'm going to play with Sophia." He looks at me as if he is asking me if he can, I'm not his mother so I give him the ok.
"OK, just be safe, please." I ask as he runs away. I shake my head, that boy is going to cause his mother so much trouble, I can see it clear as day. I get up from the floor and begin to make my way to the RV but stop as I think. Where has Daryl been. He's been out for an extended period of time and hasn't returned yet.
I climb the ladder of the RV and join Dale at the top. We sit in silence for a while before Dale begins to talk to me "He's very fond of you." I look over to Dale knowing he's talking about Carl.
I give a chuckle before I answer, "I guess, it's only cause I let him do things his mom won't let him do." We sit in silence again. I don't mind it, but it seems Dale can't take the silence for long because he asks me another question, this time getting personal. "Did you have any kids before all of this?" He waves his hand around gesturing to our surroundings. I take a deep breath before answering him.
"Oh gosh, no. I did however want children. Their just so innocent and bubbly. But in this world, you can't guarantee their safety." Dale nods his head looking at me for a second before looking away. I'm fond of Dale and I enjoy talks with him. He can get almost anyone to open up, he also gives off massive granddad energy. "Hey Dale, have you seen Daryl since he left?" I look away missing the curious gaze Dale throws my way.
"No, I'm sorry. I'll keep my eye out for him." I nod and smile at Dale as a way of saying thank you.
