Dale's head was in the RV engine as he said from inside, "Boy, that hose isn't long for this world, is it?" Jim and I decided to help the old man fix up the engine, but it doesn't seem to be going as planned.
Jim and I look at each other, I give him a shrug, honestly speaking RVs aren't my thing. Jim looks back to Dale answering him, "No, sir." I look away getting distracted by Amy's pacing only partly hearing Dale as about finding a replacement.
You can tell Amy is agitated, waiting for her sister to come back to camp, to come back to her. "It's late. They should've been back by now." Amy paces up again. I look over only now feeling the worry set in. How could I not have bothered to feel worried; my friends are out there, and they have yet to return, and I only noticed now!?
Dale looks up from inside the RV, "Worrying won't make it better." He returns to the RV; I look at Dale for a second deciding that he's right and that maybe we shouldn't worry.
"Dale has a point, Amy. All we can do it trust them and be calm." But as I say this, I see the look on her face, she's upset now. Amy walks away from us, and I start to feel worse, maybe I shouldn't have dismissed her worry and instead tried to calm her down. I move to follow after her, "Sorry Dale, I should talk to her."
I sit down next to Amy by the ledge of the "mountain" our camp is on. "She'll be back Ames; it doesn't help worrying. I'm worried too, Glenn's out there and boy knows he can get into trouble." I hear a small chuckle from Amy, she looks at me and smiles.
"Thanks Alex." I smile back at her. Sometimes it's best to just reassure someone to calm their worrying, I learnt that by constantly having to calm my father and his worrying down.
Suddenly static from the intercom disrupts the peaceful atmosphere, I never liked the noise that static made it reminded me of falling water too much and I did not like that sound at all. I hear the faint sound of T-Dogs voice coming through "Hello, base camp?" We move from our comfortable spot to the RV, where the intercom is. "Can anybody out there hear me?" Shane gets up from the log he was just on, others follow the sound of the intercom as well moving closer to the RV.
Dale climbs the ladder of the RV to get to the intercom, "Base camp, this is T-Dog. Anybody hear me?" Dale reaches for the speaker/microphone and speaks back to T-Dog, "Hello, hello?" I look up worried, has something happened, is one of them hurt?
"Reception's bad on this end. Repeat, repeat" Dale tries to change the frequency so that we could all hear better, but still the static persists. We all hear a faint "Shane is that you?" from the other side. I hate to admit it, but Shane is the reason many of us are here and haven't died yet. He even found me almost dead and chose to save me. So, it's understandable why they'd be asking for him, we depend on him.
From behind me I hear Lori ask, "Is that them?" only to not receive an answer from Dale. I look back up at Dale hoping for any clarification that they are ok, only for that hope to flitter away hearing T-Dogs next words, "We're in deep shit. We're trapped in the department store." I move to comfort Amy holding her hand as tightly as I could.
"Did he say they're trapped?" I ask towards Dale, who is still trying to get a clear frequency. I turn towards the others behind me catching Shanes worried glance. "There are geeks all over the place. Hundreds of 'em." I grow more worried than I was only seconds ago. Merle's out there, he may be an asshole to everyone, but he's been fairly nice towards me, probably because he thinks you are going to beat him up. I hear Dale ask again, "T-Dog, repeat that last, repeat?" trying once more to change the frequency but all we receive back is static.
I hear Lori ask Dale from behind me if T-Dog said they were in the department store, Dale answered her this time, "I heard it too." I look towards Shane but I'm not the only one Lori is too. Shane looks around at everyone knowing what we're about to ask him. "Shane." Lori tries to ask but before she can finish her sentence Shane shuts her down, "No way. We do not go after them. We do not risk the rest of the group Y'all know that." I give him the meanest glare I could muster up; our friends are out there; my friends are out there!
I look at Shane with fury running through my veins, "So, we're just gonna leave them there? Leave her sister there? That's your plan?" I look over to Amy as I say this and then back to him. Shane looks from me to Amy, "Look Amy, I know that this is not easy." Amy looks at him with anger answering him, "She volunteered to go to help the rest of us!" I was prepared to fight Shane at this point, why couldn't he let us go out and get them!
"I know, and she knew the risk, right?" Shane looks Amy in the eyes, but the way he talks to her is as if she is Carl's age, she may still be a kid but she ain't that damn young! I am fuming!
Shane added fuel to my fire by looking at her again with fake innocence, "See, if she's trapped, she's gone. So, we just have to deal with that. There's nothing we can do." I scoffed at that, deal with it my ass. "We made a deal to not leave anyone behind, you bitch! That should include them as well!" I glare up at Shane, he turns to me with furrowed brows as if he's getting angry with me for not supporting his decision, but I will only follow the leader so far, before I've had enough of the leader's antics. This was my line being drawn, we do not leave each other behind!
Amy looks at Shane and with the most amazing sass says, "She's my sister, you son of a bitch!" She storms off, I smile proudly at her retreating figure.
Then I turn to Shane, "I hope to God you know what you're doing because if they're not back by dusk. I'm going to drag you out there with me to look for 'em." I leave him with those words and follow Amy as thunder continues to rumble.
I hear Lori call for Amy and turn to see her coming towards us, she joins us. We're back on the ledge again, "Everything's going to be alright. She'll come back."
Amy looks at Lori slightly defeated as soft tears run down her cheeks, "You can't promise that." I can only hug her to try and comfort her. But while trying to calm her down, I can't help but wonder where the hell that redneck was and why he has yet to return.
