Kendall ended up spending the rest of the weekend at my house. Quinn still didn't want her at the apartment until she was sure their parents wouldn't show up with a warrant. It took a bit of convincing, but mom eventually agreed to let Kendall stay over as long as I slept on the couch, and we kept my bedroom door open when we were in it.
When Monday came along, I drove Vaughn, Kendall, and I to school. Vaughn took the back seat so Kendall and I could hold hands while we drove. I felt my heart start beating faster the closer to the school we got. I wasn't sure what we'd be walking into.
"You guys ready?" Vaughn asked as I parked.
"I'm sure everyone has already forgot all about it." Kendall said sarcastically.
"Right," I rolled my eyes with an amused smile.
As we walked up to the front doors, Kendall and I looked at each other.
"So – do we hold hands?" I asked.
"No point in hiding when they already know." She shrugged, holding her palm out to me.
I nodded, letting her soft fingers wrap around mine.
"If anyone says anything, I'll punch em." Vaughn spit.
"We know, Rocky." I laughed.
I could feel my heartbeat in my ears as we opened the front doors. Nothing could have prepared me for what was on the other side. The entire soccer team lined the hall leading to the commons. They all cheered as we walked through the tunnel. I looked to Kendall who was blushing hard.
Pride flags hung from the ceiling while little lawn flags were taped to the brick walls sporadically throughout the area. When we emerged into the commons the cheering got louder. There was a banner anchored to the banister of the large spiral stairs in the middle of the commons that read:
FUCK ZACH. KONNIE FOR LIFE.
A second hung from the balcony that lead to the band hallway:
VAUGHN 4 PRESIDENT.
I couldn't believe everyone had come together like this. I felt Kendall squeeze my hand. Her eyes were misty and I realized this was the opposite of her last schools response. Brooke Tasker approached us followed by the rest of the soccer team.
"You two make a really cute couple." She said with a genuine smile.
Kendall's face turned a brighter shade of red and she ducked to hide the embarrassment.
"Thanks, Brooke." I smiled, "I can't believe how supportive everyone is."
I looked to see Vaughn being treated like a celebrity. Classmates were taking selfies with him and asking to see his bruised knuckle.
"Are you kidding? Zach has been a plague at this school. The fact that Kendall cheated on him with you is the best thing to ever happen. Not to mention Kendall's no longer a raging bitch all the time now."
"Fuck you, Tasker." Kendall spat back, no longer concerned with how red her cheeks were.
Brooke let out a light-hearted laugh, "Easy, Coleman. It's a compliment. I'm glad you can be yourself now, with someone that actually makes you happy."
Kendall shook her head, but a smile still crept onto her face.
For the rest of the day, I was treated like the most popular girl in school. Everyone I used to avoid eye contact with gave me high fives and thanked me for my service. I learned that Zach was quite literally the most hated student at our school. No one cared that Kendall and I were dating. They loved that our relationship got rid of Zach, and – in turn – made Kendall no longer the most feared but most loved.
