Today's the day! My first day of senior year at Hawkins High. Nancy comes running into my room breaking me from my thoughts,
"You almost ready to go?" She asks as she grabs hold of the doorframe to stop herself. I tie my bandana onto my head, grab my dice and books, then start walking out the door.
"So ready! I'll go get Mike and we will meet you in the car!" I say excitedly. I'd been staying with Nancy and her family while my parents were away with Steve looking at colleges. They come home today after school, so this is my last morning with the Wheelers.
"Mike let's go! We don't want to be late!" I shout outside Mikes door. He and I had gotten quite close since I started staying with them. He and Dustin had taught me how to play DND and told me I should come to their club meeting after school. Steve was never really into this kind of stuff, so it wasn't until I started hanging out more with Dustin and Mike that I really got into it.
"So, you're first year of high school without your big brother... are you still going to hangout with his friends?" Mike asks from the backseat as Nancy drives. I have my license and my own car, I just liked talking with Mike and Nancy. Besides, this was my last morning with them after an entire summer.
"Which friends? His 'popular' friends..." I pause and look at him over my shoulder, "or you dorks?" I giggle as I stick my tongue out at him. I do see him as a dork, but I am one too. Especially now that I got him and his friends to teach me DND.
"Ha. Ha. Very funny. You're a dork to ya' know." He says pointing his finger at the dice I'm fiddling with in my hand. Mike and Nancy became like siblings to me... Mike more than Nancy since I spent more time with him, Dustin, Lucas, and Will during the summer learning to play their game. They ranted and raved about their new Dungeon Master at school and how he was supposed to graduate with Steve, who's a year older than me. That's about all I know about him really.
"I'll probably stick to hanging out with you boys. At least for today. I don't even know if your club will accept me." I'm only a level 5 pure neutral Cleric Wood Elf, but only because I just started. They've all been playing for years. Mike and the boys were invited to join this club, Hellfire I think is what it's called, around the last couple days of summer.
"Well, Will, Dustin, Lucas, and I are 4 votes right there. Just because you're new, doesn't mean you're not good. Besides, I think adding a girl to the group would be good for us!" Mike says leaning forward. He's been super supportive of me learning, especially because it was me who asked him to teach me. I'd always been quite interested in the game, and Dustin wouldn't shut up about it when hanging out with Steve and I. Though I never was able to work up the courage to ask Dustin because I was worried Steve's friends would make fun of me.
"Okay guys, we're here!" Nancy cheers as she parks the car. She gets out first and immediately starts walking inside giving Mike and I a small wave. Nancy didn't really talk to me much after she left Steve for Jonathan, but after about a week of me staying at her house she started to lighten up. I just assume that she thought I was mad at her for the whole thing. Although I never understood it, I was never mad. Steve was a bit of a dick to her, I have to admit it.
"I'll meet you at lunch!" I shout to Mike as I rush inside to find my locker. The day kind of flew by. I walk into the cafeteria and instantly hear my name. I look around a bit, trying to find the source of where it's coming from and my eyes land on 4 boys waving me over. The table they are sitting at is empty except for them. I make my way towards them and take a seat next to Dustin.
"So how's your first day of senior year going?" Dustin asks nudging my arm with a huge smile on his face. Dustin is always smiling. He's the light of the group, practically a little puppy.
"It's basically just a blur. I do feel like I stick out more though." I say gesturing to my bandana, black ripped shorts and cropped Metallica shirt. My style had always been very different from my entire family, but I used to cover up entirely and just wear sweats and hoodies. It wasn't until this summer that I started to embrace my body and change my style to what I really wanted it to be, but nobody besides the boys and the Wheelers had seen me in these kinds of clothes.
"Well now who's this?" I jump as the voice suddenly appears behind me. I turn to see who spoke when a pair of amber brown eyes lock with mine. My breath catches in my throat as I try to speak, his hands now resting on the back of my chair as he leans towards me.
"Eddie, this is Delaina." Mike pipes up, breaking us from our gaze . I look at Mike then notice that 2 others had joined us at the table. How long had they been there? They were just staring at me and I slowly start to feel self conscious and use my arms to cover my stomach.
"Delaina? As in Delaina Harrington? The beautiful girl who was always wearing baggy clothes and stayed with her brother and his friends all the time?" Eddie asks, the words almost jumping out of his mouth. His eyes widen in shock as he realizes that he just said all that out loud.
If he knows who I am, why don't I know him? Was I really so self conscious that I never noticed him before? Who are you Eddie, and why can't I take my eyes off of you?
