The Story of Benjamin Rogers

Part 7

About midnight, Benjamin went into Steve's room. Despite falling crying himself to sleep, he couldn't stay asleep.

Benjamin: "Come with me to the ruined city. We can drink for Bucky."

Steve got up and went with Benjamin to a ruined shop and sat down around a table. Both with a glass of alcohol.

Benjamin: "It's a shame you can get drunk."

Steve: "Only flaw with the super soldier serum I've found up to now."

They then sat in silence until they heard Peggy enter. Steve was obviously sober but Benjamin was tipsy and slurring his words. Steve turned to face Peggy then turned back around.

Steve: "Dr. Erskine said that the serum wouldn't just effect my muscles, it would affect my cells. Create a protective system of regeneration and healing. Which means I can't get drunk. Did you know that?"

Benjamin: "You told me like 5 minutes before Peggy entered."

Steve shown a forced but genuine smile.

Peggy: "Your metabolism burns four times faster than the average person. He thought it could be one of the side effects."

She then turned turned to Benjamin.

Peggy: "You, however, can definitely get drunk. I'm guessing you already know that considering your state?"

Benjamin: "Yes, m'mam."

She then turned back to Steve. 

Peggy: "It wasn't your fault."

Steve: "Did you read the report?"

Peggy: "Yes."

Steve: "Then you know that's not true."

Peggy: "You did everything you could. Both of you did. Did you believe in your friend? Did you respect him? Then stop blaming yourself. Allow Barnes the dignity of his choice. He damn well must have thought you were both worth it."

Benjamin: "We're going after Schmidt. Obviously not right now, the world is spinning, but eventually we're going to kill him."

They both shook there head at Benjamin but he just ignored them and took another swig of the bottle.

Steve: "What he's trying to say is, we're not gonna stop until all of HYDRA is dead or captured."

Peggy: "And neither of you will be alone."

The next day, there sat round a table listening to Colonel Phillips talk about Schmidt and coming up with a plan to take him down. Luckily Benjamin didn't have a hangover due to the vampire healing.

Colonel Phillips: "Johann Schmidt belongs in a bughouse. He thinks he's a good, and he's willing to blow up half the world to prove it, starting with the USA."

Howard: "Schmidt's working with powers beyond our capabilities. He gets across the Atlantic, he will wipe out the entire eastern seaboard in an hour.

Jones: "How much time we got?"

Phillips: "According to my new best friend, under 24 hours."

Man: "Where is he now?"

Phillips: "HYRDA's last base is here. In the Alps, 500 feet below the surface."

Morita: "So what are we supposed to do?"

Soldier: "I mean, it's not like we can just knock on the front door."

Steve: "Why not?"

Benjamin: "That's exactly what we need to do."
