Addy:
"Be careful, Kalani!" I scream at my friend as she walks away from me on the edge of the pier. She was pretending it was a balance beam, that she was back at the gym.
"I am fine, Addy!" She yelled back drawing the "ine" out. She lifted up her foot to a step, and I saw her body visibly wobble. I took the inside of my bottom lip into my lip and bit down to the point that I drew blood.
"Damn it, K." I whispered under my breath as I watched my friend giddily play with death. Could I stop her from messing around? No, this is Kalani Hilliker. She's impossible to be persuaded.
I let out a long sigh. "Kalani," I whined to my friend, "you're making me nervous." She spun around on the ledge to face me, and my heart stopped.
I watched helplessly as my friends foot got caught on a nail, and she lost her balance. I trail of curses that would make a sailor proud flew from my mouth as I ran to where she had fallen off. "Kalani!" I screeched.
I saw Kalani's bob of brunette hair floating above the calm waters. She looked up, and her dark eyes sound my face.
"God, are you okay?" I hollered down, not knowing what to say.
"Yes," her voice floated up to me, followed by giggles, "Come jump in!"
"But it is d-a-n-g-e-r-o-u-s," I countered, spelling the word for emphasis.
"Oh, come on, Ads. You know you wanna."
I felt waves of confusion and nervousness wash over me, but I pushed them away.
"I'm coming down!" I yelled to her as I closed my eyes to take a step off of the pier.
For a moment it felt like I was flying, and then I landed in the water. The water submerged me, beginning at my feet and ending above my head. I waited a moment as my body slowly drifted back to the surface.
"Wow, that was so 'd-a-n-g-e-r-o-u-s'," Kalani said, obviously mocking me. I skimmed my hand on the water so that it would splatter around the face.
"Shut up."
"Love you too," she said swimming toward me and pushing me under the water playfully.
As I broke the surface, I gasped for air. I then turned to Kalani with a devious look on my face.
"Oh, you did not," I did a small series of snaps in a "z" figure, "just do that." She gave a me a smirk. "It is on, like Donkey Kong! You. Are. Going. Down!"
It was in this moment that I realized my best friend had stolen my heart. No, she hadn't stolen it romantically; but she stole it nonetheless. So, watch out world; Kalani Hilliker is a heat thief.
