Dream

It's only the gentle shake of the ambulance that wakes me up. I hear muffled voices and open my eyes to stare at the roof of the vehicle I'm in. I feel burned, my right arm feeling the worst as I move my gaze around. A doctor looks down at me and I see the figures of George and Sapnap standing further away, arms crossed.

"You're alright kid" the doctor says. "You're in an ambulance, we're taking you to hospital for further checks"

"Will my-" my voice is quiet and scratchy. "Will my arm be okay?"

"It isn't as badly burnt as we first thought" the doctor says. "But it still needs attention so you will be in hospital overnight"

I sigh softly and George and Sapnap come over. George holds my uninjured arm and Sapnap looks over me. The doctor moves away to check on the drips that are in my arm. I give the two a sad smile.

"You are so stupid" Sapnap sounds mad but the quiver in his voice betrays his worry. "You shouldn't have just run in there, into the burning building" he stops talking and looks away, biting his lip. George sits down on the end of the bed, still holding onto my arm. He looks at me, the tears that I thought he'd cried out beginning to fall again.

"You're here" he says with a small sniff. "You're alive"

I know my throat wouldn't be able to handle talking again so I stay quiet and hope that my look of apology is enough for him. He doesn't lose eye contact as I close my eyes, the regret of my actions washing over me. I don't fall asleep, I just stay still and try not to expose how much pain I actually am in. Not just for me, more for that family who will have to now live without their father. Who I couldn't save. I think to what happened, how the girls' all ran out but I didn't have the energy and collapsed. How Sapnap was the one who saved me as I screamed George's name with fire racing up my clothes and burning my eyes. I can still taste the smoke in my mouth, still feel it in my lungs. I hope that the hospital has water because I sure need some. I open my eyes slowly and try to push away the fear and tears that are threatening to take over.

The sirens are still wailing as we speed down the road, swerving around cars at a dangerous pace but I know I'm in safe hands so we won't be in any trouble. I listen to the heart monitor beeping at a steady pace and the soft breathing of George and Sapnap as the ambulance veers left and into a carpark. The hospital looms over the vehicle and the doctor appears back to look at me.

"Alright kid we're taking you in now, you feeling okay?" he asks me. I nod at him and he opens the back of the ambulance, another doctor, a female, helping to wheel me out. George and Sapnap follow closely as I quickly roll across the pavement and through the hospital doors. People give me looks as I go in but my arm is covered in a white blanket so I'm hoping whatever I've done to it isn't ugly. I am placed in a room pretty quickly and the female doctor stays with me, busily checking my drips and heart rate.

"The doctors should be here to assess you shortly" she says with a smile. "You need anything?"

"Some water would be nice" I say quietly. She hears me and nods before walking out.

"Is the TV remote over there, George?" Sapnap asks. "We should have something on to entertain the brave asshole over here"

I wish I had the energy to tell him that I was sorry and that part of me wishes that I didn't do it. George swipes up the remote and flicks the on button. Straight away, the TV flashes to life, a news reporter standing in front of the wreckage of the building that I was in not long ago. The fire is out, leaving it in wooden pieces on the ground. I don't want to watch it but here I can see if the family I got out is safe.
