"Where the fuck were you?" Frank, Nova's father, groaned when she walked in the door, which caused her to jump.
"I uh, decided to go to the library to do some research on a paper for school . You're home early."
"You better not be lying girl!"
"I'm not, I promise." She shook her head.
"Hm really, maybe next time you should check your surroundings because I know for a fact you weren't at no library. You see, I happen to be driving up our street when you decided to make a pit stop at what look like a boy's house." He said as he took his belt off.
"He's just a friend daddy. He wanted to introduce me to his sister Zina, thought maybe I could help her with her school work because she's not doing too good in school."
"Hm and how old is this Zina?" He used quotation marks around her name.
"She's actually in a grade higher than me. I can go see if she'll come over so you can see her for yourself, that she's real." Nova said in a shaky tone.
"Yeah why don't you do that and while you're at it, have this boy you call a friend come too." He had used quotation marks around friend.
With that she walked out and rushed down to the Baker's household and knocked on the door.
"Oh hey Nova what's up?" Zack answered the door.
"Hey is your sister still here?"
"Uh yeah why?" He asked her confused.
"I need to burrow her for a few minutes."
"Zina!" He called out then asked, "What do you need with her?"
"My dad seen me walking into your house and instead of saying I was with you exactly I kinda lied and said I came to help Zina with some school work."
"Why would you have to lie?" He then called out louder, "Zina! Come here!"
"Because he's sorta strict. I don't want to go into it." She said as Zina walked into the living room.
"What do you want loser?" She then noticed Nova standing there, "Oh hey you're back again huh."
"Yeah about that, I need to come with me please. My dad wants to meet you because I told him I was here helping you with school work." She grabbed her hand. "Zack you come too because he initially saw us together."
"But why would I need help, I'm very good in my classes."
"Ugh just come on." She pulled her out of the house, "My dad is strict and if he knew I was hanging with a boy he'd go apeshit so when he saw me going to your guys house I used you as an excuse. Just tell him I was helping you with English or something please." She begged as they walked to Nova's house.
"And what do I get out of this?"
"I'll give you my lunch money or something for a week."
"Nah, how about just for a few days."
"Deal." She said and they walked inside, "Dad, this is Zina and Zack Baker."
"Ah so this is the girl that's older than you but you had to help with school work."
"Uh yes sir, Zack apparently overheard me talking to our parents about getting a bad grade in my..math class, he decided to have Nova help me bring it up."
Frank nodded once, "Really? And why you want someone younger than you help you, I wouldn't like that. I'd feel even more dumb." He smirks. "And of all people why Nova?"
"We have the same math class and I've seen how good she is in that class so I decided to ask her." Zack shrugs, "I didn't see a problem in it. My sister is good in her other classes, except for that one. And I figured have another girl help instead of a guy, my parents would like that better anyways."
"I can see how they would feel on that. I know I would rather Nova be tutored by another girl than a boy. I just didn't think she was smart enough to help someone older than her in any subject let alone math."
"Dad!" Nova shook her head and tried to laugh it off to make them think he was joking.
Zack looked at his sister and mouthed 'Wow. '
"Anyways." Frank clapped, "I think you two should get going. I'm sure your parents will be wondering where you're at."
"Oh, our mom might but dad ain't be home to later. Although mom probably took our little brother Matt to baseball practice." Zina spoke up.
"Ok, and what does your family do for a living?"
"Our mom works at a bakery and our dad is a baseball coach for a little league team."
"Wait, let me get this straight, your mom's last name is Baker and she works at a bakery?" Frank snickered which the three of them chuckled with him.
"Yeah we thought it was pretty amusing but she's been there for years."
"And dad's a baseball coach?"
"Yeah, it's pretty big in our house. Matt is on one of the smaller teams and Zacky boy here." Zina patted her brothers shoulder, "Is on the baseball team at school."
Frank's eyes lit up, "Really?"
"My dad is a huge baseball fan. If it's on T.V he's watching it." Nova pointed out.
"Baseball and football to be exact." Frank pointed out. "So you planning on entering into college baseball after highschool?"
Zack shook his head, "More than likely not. My dad would love if I did but that's not what I want to do with my life. I want to become a famous guitarist in a band."
Frank chuckled shaking his head, "Yeah good luck with that one. You would have more success in a baseball career than being in some sell out band."
"Dad! He's very good at the guitar."
"And how the hell would you know?"
"Because, while me and Zina was going over school work, he was in his room and we heard him playing."
"Right." He smirked.
After a few more minutes Zina and Zack left so Nova can start supper.
