After another four hours of Babble's creative but effective torture Mai was released to help make dinner.
But she wasn't so lucky this time.
Her last meal was spent with Tokoyami, Shoji and Jirou.
It was pleasant but uneventful.
But she was still being watched by her other friends, Kirishima was wondering if he did anything wrong and Sero and Kaminari started to think she had a mind reading quirk as well as a strength related one. While Mina and Bakugou had absolutely no fucking idea what she was doing other than mercilessly slaying vegetables.
So when they saw her again at dinner Mina immediately ran up to her.
"Bessssstie!!!!!"
She yelled wrapping her arms around Mai as she picked up firewood."Yes?"
She asked standing up dispite Minas added weight."What did I do?! Why do you hate me?! Forcing me to sit alone with those gross boys!"
Mina complained playfully addressing the subject."You did nothing, and I'm sorry for not being there to soothe your trauma."
Mai apologized shrugging Mina off."Then I insist you sit with me, to make up for your mistake."
Mina said jumping up."Of course."
Mai grumbled with a slight smirk.
Mina was relentless when it came to freindship, Mai was to far in to just drop out now....................
It wasn't awkward
Mai never really talked anyways, just sat there.
But now she was painfully aware that it might be weird for her to only be sitting there.
She used to be comfortable just staying there listening, but now she felt like it was a bother."You okay Mai?"
Kirishima finally asked, leaning over the table.
No one was really paying attention to them so they were practically talking alone.
"I- I didn't do anything, did I?"
He whispered. She shook her head quickly.
"No, I'm fine. Just... Tired."
She answered with a lie.
He nodded and accepted this answer before tilting his head."Oh yeah, where were you? I never saw you during training."
He asked loud enough that the other students at the table turned to her as well waiting for an answer."Yeah! You must have been doing some really tough training!"
Sero said curiously.Mai shuffled.
"Not really... I was actually doing... Schoolwork?"
She said nervously. The other students blinked and looked at each other.
"Like math?"
Denki finally asked tilting his head."Yeah, I'm a little behind on school work and Aizawa thought I should focus more on academic learning rather than quirk training."
She explained.
"A little" wasn't quite accurate.
She was currently two years behind but according to Babble she had potential to catch up quickly."So wait... You're so strong that they aren't even making you do quirk training?!"
Sero said in shock."Bruh I would choose being strapped to a generator over algebra any day, sorry Mai."
Denki said chuckling and leaning back."Same."
Mina agreed."Aren't you idiots taking summer school classes Tonight?"
Bakugou asked, referencing their previous failure to pass the physical exam."Hey! Don't remind me bro..."
Denki said wiping away imagery tears.
"While you guys get to have fun playing games, we get to get lectured by Vlad king."
He whispered sadly.
As if summoned by his complaining Vlad kind appeared behind them like the grim reaper.
"Kirishima, Aishido, Sero, Kaminari. Come with me."
He comanded."Y-yes sir!!"
They yelled in unison, jumping up and sadly waving farewell to their classmates....................
Mai stood by her partner, a frown prominent on her face.
Uraraka didn't look too happy either.
They stood next to each other waiting to be dismissed into the woods."Two up head, one in a tree the other under ground."
Mai said only two minutes into the exercise."Damnit."
A voice said around thirty feet ahead of them.
Another person rose up from the ground.
"Reset for the next group." she grumbled."You know you don't have to do that."
Uraraka mumbled.
"Let them at least try to scare us, it won't work anyways.""Alright then."
Mai agreed already hearing the boy known as Kuroiro up ahead with the mushroom girl Komori.Uraraka gasped as she noticed a small mushroom growing on her hand.
"Mai what-"
She was cut off by her own squeal as she saw a dark silhouette with a glowing face behind Mai."What happened to "that won't work I'm unscareable."
Mai said in a mockingly high voice with an eye roll."H-hey I wasn't scared!"
Uraraka stuttered with a red face."Yes you were."
All teenagers said in unison.
Including the normally silent shadow boy."I- oh come on."
Uraraka said stomping forward."Good luck, Bakugou and Todoroki are behind us, get them good."
Mai said to the students of class 1-B walking after Uraraka. They walked in silence, neither willing to say anything until Mai started to notice that something wasn't right.
"Someone's in the woods."Uraraka groaned.
"I told you not to spoiled it-""No, not a student. They're walking too far away from the path, towards us..."
Mai shook her head.
"Their getting closer, they smell... Like smoke-"
Her eyes widened and she grabbed Uraraka.
"There's a fire, someone is setting the woods on fire!""Smart girl."
A voice said from the treeline.
But Mai knew what she needed to do.
She wrapped her arms around Uraraka and released her wings, lifting them up just before a blue flame set fire to the ground they were just standing on.In a moment Uraraka grabbed Mai's arm and become lighter than a feather making it easier for Mai to carry her over the trees and through the window of the camp building.
Mai swung Uraraka above her head and used her exposed knees to break through the window then she straightened out her legs and landed in a crouch."Rika! Uraraka! What's going on out there!"
Iida asked as him and the other students jumped up."There was a villain setting the woods in fire!"
Uraraka answered.
Mai nodded looking down at her cut up knees.
"There were more too, a few adults spread out individually."
She confirmed."Alright."
Vlad king said from the doorways her was guarding.
"Everyone stay here.""Sir."
Mai said respectfully drawing his attention.
"I'm going back out."
