I was in my bunk room getting ready for bed, Nat was in the shower room. Once I was changed I sat down on my bed with my book.
Knock, knock.
I figured it was Bob coming to say goodnight, something he did regularly so I got up and opened it, to my shock it was Hangman.
"Hailey, can we talk for a second?" he asks.
I look around the hall, "sure."
He comes in and sits on Phenix's bed across from me. I sit on mine and cross my legs.
"I overheard you and Rooster talking at Iceman's funeral," he says seriously.
"About what?"
"The loss that you have experienced, your dad, mom, Mav, Ice."
When he lists my families names I want to punch him, my stomach turns. I say nothing, just stare at him sitting in MY bunk room talking about MY loved ones.
"Look I just want to say I am sorry for what I said in class a few days ago...about your dad."
I cringe.
"It was a shitty thing for me to do and I didn't realize how much you and your brother have been through. Not that that is any kind of an excuse. I feel really awful about it."
"Really?" I ask.
"Yeah yeah I know, Jake has feelings," he says in a mocking tone.
I laugh, "maybe you should show it more often," I suggest.
"Yeah, I probably should. And I am sorry for making fun of Bob too. That wasn't cool of me, and I have apologized to him but I thought I should tell you too."
"Thank you Jake, this means a lot," I smile gently.
"I just- We might not come back from this mission and I didn't want you to go thinking something wrong about me when I was just being in mature and frankly an ass."
"I understand, thank you for the apology, but I think you should also apologize to Bradly."
"I have. Yesterday after the funeral."
"Good."
He stands from his bed and I stand with him, "can I give you a hug?" he asks me.
I give him a hug as the answer, "you just need to be kind, Hangman."
"Thank you for your forgiveness."
I pull away, "now get out before the rumours start!"
We both laugh and he leaves the bunk room, passing Nat in the hallway.
"What the fuck was that?" she asks coming into the room.
"Long story."
