Description:
"I keep trying to think of ways to make myself hate you."
"Kind of hard to do when you're in love with me, isn't it?" He said.
Meet Elliot Jensen; she's stubborn, sarcastic, short-tempered and ambitious. Meet Elliot Fintry, he's impulsive, rude, cold, and reckless.
It might be annoying having to share the same name as the person you hate, but it's even more annoying having to share the same house as them. He's everything she hates, so why does he make her heart pound at just the thought of him?
Winter and summer. Fire and water. North and south. Heaven and hell. This isn't a love story, this is a story about love.
Review:
I don't even know how I'm gonna start with this. I just finished re-reading Saving Elliot a little over 24 hours ago, and I still feel lost. I want more of Elliotness, but the author made it clear that there will be no spin-offs or sequels, so... :(
Anyway, Saving Elliot is probably one of the quirkiest tales of love I've ever read on Wattpad so far, and you'll know why when you read the first chapter where our two Elliot's meet. They met in the most unexpected but hilarious circumstance, in a way that's more interesting than Fintry just having to live under the roof of Jensen's family. (Hint: kitchen, which is why I agree to a reader's comment saying, 'STARTED FROM THE KITCHEN NOW WE'RE HERE').
Another quirky thing about SE is the characters, who are pretty much the source of entertainment and humor in the story. This is probably the greatest thing about Saving Elliot as well. The characters are all quirky, but they have their own quirks, and there's a bunch of them in the story! It would make you really wonder how the author came up with all these characters, how she was able to make them distinct from each other, but still equally interesting at the same time. The SE chapters are always long but never get boring/dragging, because something entertaining always happens, like how does the author do that? With the characters she writes about and the instances she puts them in, I guess she's just one of those writers blessed with a brilliant and humorous imagination.
Jensen's character is one of the most likable female protagonists I've read about. She's pretty impressive, because she doesn't only differ from the cliché girly protagonists by being a football/American soccer nerd, she also takes her education seriously. I love the fact that this story about love doesn't solely revolve around the idea of romantic love. It also deals about her everyday quirky life as a teenager, which consists of her being competitive at school (both in sports and academics), dealing with stupid, comical brothers and a frightening mother (her father doesn't really help since he's also scared of his wife, lol), and messing around with her friends on a daily basis.
Her relationship with everyone important in her life can be described as tough love. Since she grew up in a house with several older brothers, she's used to being aggressive and violent at times, which is why it's really more befitting for her to have more guy friends. It's hilarious to read about her daily encounters with her family and friends because they're always stupid and weird, but definitely entertaining at the same time.
Moreover, as a rereader, I kept having this notion that these comical events aren't just thrown into the story by the author to grab more readers and make people laugh. I believe that when she wrote that SE is a story about love, she's not only talking about the love between our two Elliot's. She's also referring to how Jensen deals with her family and friends, because although Jensen always internally describes her fights and arguments with other characters as petty and immature, there is no doubt that she still loves them to bits. And I admit that I grew to love the imperfect characters in SE through their nonsensical fights and arguments.
