Review:
Okay so before any of you think that the reason why this trilogy is one of my favorites is because I'm one of those 1D die-hard fans, I want to clarify that I was not a 1D fan before reading After, but I enjoyed listening to a few of their songs back then. When I found this story on Wattpad, I was intrigued by its enormous number of reads (~100M reads) back then, which really says something, so I decided to jump into it. While most of After readers are already 1D fans when they started reading this story, I became a 1D fan (especially Harry's) because of this story, lmao.
The After description may sound cliche, but the entirety of the trilogy really isn't. I thought the story would be cliche, until the author dropped the first bomb aka twist of the story. There are actually at least seven twists/surprises in the story, but I never felt like those twists were just there to lengthen the story. Despite the constant pull-and-push and intoxicating back-and-forth cycle between Tessa and Harry, the trilogy's never dragging. Every twist is much needed in the story, because I think the trilogy would end with a loophole or two without them. Even the characters have their own twists regarding their true selves, turning them from a black-and-white 2D into a multi-colored 3D, and the trilogy became much more meaningful because of this.
To describe Tessa and Harry's relationship as bipolar is an understatement. I swear, Hessa goes from 0-100 real quick with the mature scenes, lmao. One minute, they're trying to not rip each other's head off. The next minute, they're already all over each other (another understatement!) They remind me of Mr. & Mrs. Smith sometimes.
Moreover, you'd think that Harry would be the only one with issues due to his self-loathing, self-destructive personality, but Tessa clearly does too with her ridiculous OCD and over-achieving self. Tessa and Harry are basically on the opposite ends/extremes of a stick, and the more they spend time with each other, the more they bring each other to the middle of that stick, which is actually a slow progress, especially on Harry's part. To sum it up, Harry brings out the worst of Tessa, while Tessa brings out the best of Harry, but for some reason, they're still perfect for each other.
As the story progresses, the other things that surprised me aside from the twists are the noticeable developments in Tessa's and Harry's personalities. Tessa, being assertive and straightforward, and Harry, being thoughtful and calm, always caught me off guard, when Tessa used to always keep her negative thoughts to herself, while Harry used to always explode whenever he feels like it. I just really appreciate how both Tessa and Harry help each other to become their better selves while battling against their obstacles together literally and figuratively.
I don't know, I just really love this trilogy so much, and THIS IS THE BEST OF THE BEST STORIES I'VE EVER READ ON WATTPAD so far. Anna Todd's writing is just really professional, you'd think she was already a published author/writer when she started writing After. Her metaphors are so freakin' beautiful, which also made her the best Wattpad author I've ever encountered so far. The twists turned the story into such a brilliant work of art because of the millions of perfectly subtle hints I never noticed on my first time reading. That's why every time I encountered a hint on my second time, I couldn't help but chant 'so fuckiing brilliant' in my head, lmao.
To be honest, everything that I just said does no justice to how great of a story After is. It just feels like whatever I say cannot perfectly describe the fuckiing beauty of After trilogy. That's how I love this story. You just really have to try and read it, and as what Anna Todd wrote, you can't judge a book without reading from cover to cover.
Favorite Lines:
Harry: I love you.
Tessa: And I love you too.
Harry: Don't say too.
Tessa: Why?
Harry: It just makes me feel like you are just agreeing with me.
--
Tessa: I love him and I know without a doubt he loves me. Even if we don't last forever, if we end up never speaking again, I will always know that in this moment, he was everything to me.
--
Liam: Just because he can't love you the way you want him to doesn't mean he doesn't love you with everything he has.
--
Harry: Despite the hundreds of buildings that light the skyline, she's the only thing that could make this city worth a damn.
--
Tessa: It's ironic really, that the man who hates the world is most loved by it.
--
Kimberly: Men are assholes. Every single one of them. But truth be told, women are assholes too so the only way for it to work is if you find an asshole you can deal with. One that makes you a little less of an asshole.
--
Harry: She made me normal almost, but with each drop of glue she used on me, she lost that drop herself.
--
Harry: I don't like kids or babies or teenagers but then again, I don't really like adults either. I pretty much only like Tessa, so maybe a little version of her wouldn't be so bad?
--
Tessa: I don't think it would be possible for me to love you more than I do.
--
Molly: Who's this?
Zayn: This is..
Therise: Therise.
Molly: You've gotta be sh*tting me.
--
Molly: Zayn lost and Hessa prevailed.
Niall: What the f*ck is a Hessa?
Molly: I came up with it! I get full credit for that sh*t. I named those crazy f*cks and I expect an invite to their wedding.
--
Tessa: Okay is that gray space in the middle where you can wake up each day and carry on with your life, even laugh and smile often, but okay isn't joy. Being okay is what most people settle for, myself included, and we pretend that okay is fine, when we actually hate it and we spend majority of our time waiting to break out of just being okay.
--
Harry: You won't know how lucky you are to be able to spend you life with the other half of your soul, until you have to spend your life without them.
--
Harry: Having her in my arms this way is more satisfing than any sex we could have. Just having her here, still drawn to me in the way that only the two of us understand, makes me the happiest son of a b*tch around.

Whatever their souls are made of, his and hers are the same.
