I straightened his tie in front of the mirror, and admired myself. Marius had informed me that the Thénardier girls were to come to the ABC Café today. I didn't usually let girls in, or dress up for that matter, but I'd heard all three were quite beautiful and sweet, in contrast to their parents.u
There was Cosette, who was a tall, graceful brunette, and looked nothing like the other two. She was adopted many a year ago, for who knows what? Knowing the Thénardiers, I'm guessing money. Cosette was the ideal woman, but never really had her own beliefs. Marius had kind of taken her under his wing, like a little sister.
Éponine was petite with light brown hair and blue eyes, and was much more spunky and intelligent than the other two. She was best friends with Marius, and they'd always get in all sorts of trouble together.
Azelma was the youngest, a few years younger than Éponine, with dark brown hair, a sweet smile and ladylike personality. She was a bit more single-minded than Cosette, but not as independent as Éponine.
They had a little brother, too, Gavroche, who often hung out at the ABC Club. Gavroche had a cute infatuation with Cosette but she never paid much attention.
I was hoping to impress Cosette as well. She seemed like just the right woman who could stand behind me in revolution. Plus, Marius already had his eye on Éponine, and Grantaire on Azelma.
Confidently, I, with my head held high, strode over to the ABC Café. Cosette and Azelma were sitting primly at one of the tables with Courfneyrac and Grantaire.
Azelma wore a worried expression, while Cosette giggled at some joke Courfneyrac was telling.
I raised his arms commandingly but no one noticed. They were all staring at the new girls. Joly was drooling at the sight of the top of Cosette's dress slipping down.
Grantaire was drunk, as usual, and laughing for no apparent reason.
"EVERYONE!" I yelled over the commotion. Joly drew his tongue back into his mouth, Courfneyrac stopped talking as did everyone else. Besides Grantaire. The only noise to be heard was his loud laughter. Grantaire soon realized that, and stopped.
"Now, I'd like to--" I began, but was interrupted by Marius and Éponine racing in together. They not were laughing and out of breath.
"Marius." My voice was stern. "You're late." Marius and Éponine looked at each other and tried to hold back laughter.
Éponine was so pretty when she smiled. . . 'Shush!' I told my mind.
"I'm Éponine. You can call me 'Poni--" Enjolras cut her off.
"'Ponine. I know." Feuilly and the rest of the boys were giving me an odd look. I continued, wondering why they were looking at me strangely.
Cosette and Azelma were whispering to each other and giggling. Marius unconsciously wrapped an arm protectively around Éponine's waist. She looked at it and blushed.
I felt a burning anger at that. His arm around her waist.
Grantaire started to laugh again. "GRANTAIRE." Enjolras's glare was icy. An uncomfortable silence echoed through the Café, to be broken by Bahorel adjusting his chair. Azelma and Cosette looked scared, and it seemed as if Marius and Éponine were conversing with their minds. Marius nodded and then looked as I'd he was about to talk. Marius raised one eyebrow, and Éponine smirked.
"I-I. . ." Enjolras felt like he was about to burst in tears. Today was supposed to be special, but now they're scared of him!
Grantaire, the wonderful friend he was, distracted them all by dropping his wine bottle on the floor.
He snuck over to me.
I let a little tear go down, then mentally slapped myself. Revolution leaders don't cry! This little day, my little life. That only made me more depressed.
Grantaire patted me on the back, then ran off to throw up in the washroom.
I surveyed the room. Courfneyrac was trying to flirt with Cosette, who looked totally uninterested. She was staring at Marius, entranced.
Marius and Éponine had intertwined hands. Éponine sat on Marius's lap, laughing. I forced myself to look away, not wanting to see them get any further.
Cosette approached me shyly. I looked over at her, and she moved closer.
"You like him." I stated, referring to Marius.
"You like her." She stated, just as matter-of-factly.
"You're not like I expected."
"Neither are you." She gave me a little smile, which I returned.
Azelma came over to us, as did Joly. Grantaire did, too.
Éponine and Marius saw us, then walked over, not at all touching, this time.
The rest of the boys gathered in a crowd around us.
"Enjolras." Cosette's high voice said. "Why don't you tell us your revolution plans?"
I looked at them. I looked at the boys. I looked at the girls. I looked at all the faces, staring at me, including Éponine with her sky blue eyes.
I couldn't do it. I ran out, not turning back, and headed over to the River Seine. I stood next to the wall, looking over at the water rushing beneath me.
A warm hand touched my shoulder and I turned around. To my surprise, it was Éponine.
"I'm sorry." She looked into my eyes.
"For what." I turned around and watched the river.
"I really should've paid attention to you." I faced her again.
"It's okay." Then, I saw Marius coming to us out of the corner of my eye.
Without any thought, I leaned down and kissed her.
