1832, Toulon

"Isabelle, dear, time for bed!" I called to my daughter.

"But, Maman!

"No buts! Off to bed!" Isabelle reluctantly went to bed, leaving Felix and I alone at the table.

"Today's the day." He said in a low voice.

"What day?" I propped my head on my hands, looking at him.

"I have 1,500 francs. What we said we'd need to get Cosette back."

"C-Cosette. . ." I hadn't thought of her in years! But Felix did? "Well, shall we?"

"Oui. Tomorrow we'll find them." Both our words were empty of emotion. What would it be like when we found Cosette? Would she remember me?

"Oui."

So we were off.

The carriage bounced as Isabelle, Felix and I bounced silently. I stared down at my nearly ripping blue frock. It had seemed so pretty when Felix first bought it. Now the navy had faded to a pale blue, and the once satiny bow turned opaque. Not that it matters of course. I've worn much worse. Still, like my dress, the gloss and glimmer of Felix and I's once wild relationship had faded. We never fought, of course. It just felt. . . Empty.

We rode on and on down the never-ending path to the Inn. At last we arrived in the town on Saint Michele. I nodded at Felix and the faint clopping of horse hooves came to a halt.

Isabelle followed me out of the carriage. A painful tension-filled silence echoed around us. Despite the laughs, yells, and noise coming from the citizens, a quietness lurked in the air.

"Bonjour!" I called out. A nearby street girl turned towards us. Her clothes were literally rags. I could see her bare feet were dirty and cut. The girl's mangled hair tumbled down her bony shoulders. Still, the girl possessed an air that she once had it all. . . And lost it. A faint trace of pride still attempted to raise her slumped body. Beauty hid behind the clumps of dirt.

"Bonjour." The trace of dignity showed more in her broken voice. It was hoarse, but melodic all the same. If she weren't in such poor conditions, I'm sure she could be a wonderful singer. The heavy way she moved hid if she could dance or not. But the way her foot tapped to the revolutionaries' faint song. . .

"Do you know where the Inn is?" I inspected her mangled body once more. Something hit me. A sense of déjà-vu flooded through my brain. How did I know this girl?

"The Inn," the déjà-vu hit her too. "I used to live there. I am the innkeeper's daughter." The girl appeared to have nothing to hide. Almost as if she'd given up. I felt the need to hug her, caress her hair and say 'everything's gonna be all right'. I knew it wouldn't though. Everything would not be all right. This girl let her parents give me the wrong girl! I glanced down at Isabelle who was staring intensely at the broken girl, who didn't really care. "My name is Éponine."

"I'm looking for Cosette," my words rushed together all at once. Felix, who I had forgotten about until now, loosed draped an arm around me. Éponine watched with jealousy. Her sight wandered to someone behind me, but quickly flashed back.

"Cosette is gone."

"What? What do you mean Cosette is gone?! She's dead?! Where is she?!" I could barely feel Felix's arm trembling against my rapidly quivering body. My eyes threatened to let out tears. If Cosette was dead. . . No. Unthinkable.

"She's gone off to college. Changed her hair, name, everything." Éponine bluntly stated. She no longer looked me in the eye.

"We have to find her." I turned to Felix worriedly. Our hands intertwined. All of a sudden, the butterflies were back. The excitement of a new romance. . . Or just an old one, rekindled by the flame of a common cause ignited in our hearts.

With that, I said "au revoir," handed the girl a franc, and marched off to find my daughter.
