Stranger Things: It Started with a knock in the night (Byler and Steddie)

'Date' gone wrong

Steve woke up early in the morning like every day when he had to open the shop. He was making breakfast for himself and the kids to reheat when they would wake up. There was no point in waking them up so early when it was Saturday. Let them sleep. He was making pancakes and coffee when he heard a knock at his door. It was 7 in the morning and he already had a visitor. He really hopes that it's not one of the kids. Or Nancy. Maybe it's Robin. Or Eddie. But there was no reason for any of them to be here at this hour. When he went to open the door it was revealed to be Johnathan. 

"Oh. Hey Steve. I brought some change of clothes for Will", he said with a small smile. He and Jonathan hadn't started as friends. Quite the opposite. He had been an asshole to him in high school. Like with pretty much everyone that was inferior to King Steve. But their relationship had improved a little after the whole Upside Down happened even if there hadn't been together all the time. Still. They were pretty awkward around each other. Especially with Jonathan dating Nancy after she broke his heart. But after the Vecna thing was over and The Byers moved back to Hawkins they actually sat down and talked for hours and developed a friendship bond.

"So early in the morning?"

"I woke up early and couldn't sleep anymore. Soo"

Steve hummed. "Come in. Will is not awake yet," he said and he walked back into the kitchen. Jonathan followed him after he deposited the bag on the living room couch.

"Thank you for letting Will spend the night here"

"Dude. There's no way you can tell no to Will. It's similar to kicking a puppy" Steve said and Jonathan chuckled.

"Yes. I guess that you are right", he said and he sat down at the kitchen counter. The atmosphere had turned into a sort of awkward silence. The only noise heard was from the kitchen as Steve made pancakes.

"Soo. How your relationship with Nancy" Steve asked after a while.

"Ahh. It's good. Really good"Jonathan said and Steve hummed as he put a cup of coffee in front of him. "Thank you"

"Welcome," Steve said as he sipped from his own coffee. "Have you tried to be with someone else"

"Steve.."

"No. Don't misunderstand it. I don't want to get back together with her. I just realized that she was;t as kind as I thought. And definitely not a supportive sister"

Jonathan frowned confused at Steve's words. Not a kind person like he had thought and not a supportive sister. What does that mean? Then his eyes widened and he looked up at Steve. "Did something happen with Mike?" he asked.

"You can say that, "Steve said as he placed two plates of pancakes on the counter and he sat down beside his friend. 

"What happened?"

"Look. It's not my story to tell. But there had been some arguments in the Wheeler house. And Mike had come to me distraught and told me about it and how his sister hadn't done anything to help. And when I confronted her earlier she admitted that she was on her parents' side"

"Shit"

"You can say that again. Just consider what I told you. Alright?"He asked and Jonathan hummed. The two of them eat in silence, this time it was more comfortable than awkward. And when Steve was finished first he stood up and he grabbed a key from the drawer and he threw it at Johnathan. "I have to go to work. Reheat the food for the kids when they woke up and lock the door after you left"

"Wait. You are going to let us stay here in your house without you being here?"

Steve shrugged. "As long as none of you burn my house or destroy it, then I don't have anything against it. See ya", he said as he left.
