It didn't take long for them to get out of the hospital and into the car, the hardest part being putting away the wheelchair in the boot of the car. He kept glancing over at the girl, double checking to make sure she was still okay and conscious. She just stared out of the window, a stoic expression present on her face. She still held onto the flowers, but the cards and little gifts were all placed on the back seat of the car.
She knew her classmates would probably react the same way her teacher did when they saw her. And as much as she wanted to meet them, she didn't want to have to explain things, so she did the only thing she could think of and turned her head to the man driving.
"Hey teach, can you explain my situation to my classmates before I meet them, I'd rather not deal with that confrontation, or their sympathy." He looked at her from the corner of his eye for a moment, but soon hummed in agreement.
"Oh, speaking of your classmates, you should know that you live with them." Her eyebrows furrowed as she turned back to him waiting for an explanation. And so, he explained the dorms and the series of events that led to such circumstances. Hearing about her past made her curious.
"...You never actually explained what happened in the accident." Truth is, he didn't want to have to explain it to her, he never wanted to relive that memory of what he saw again. But someone had to tell her, and she had basically just asked him.
"Well... it's not a pleasant story... But I suppose you deserve to know." He inhaled and exhaled slowly. "We were on a mission, both of us, a few of your classmates and a load of other pro hero's. The mission was to save a little girl called Eri who was being used for her quirk, they were abusing her and using their quirks on her to test the limits of her quirk in the worst way possible. Her quirk is called rewind, she can rewind a person back to a time when they were younger, a time before they were hurt, or even a time before they existed... or before they got their quirks."
He goes on to explain everything the Yakuza were planning on doing with Eri and her quirk, he even explained some of the fights that went on during the mission, not that she had any idea who he was on about. He paused for a moment and then asked her not to say anything to any of her classmates, not even the ones who were part of the mission unless he gave her permission. To which she agreed.
"Anyway, that's where you come in... Just as Overhaul went to grab Eri, you stepped in the way, stopping him... he grabbed you instead of her, but he didn't use his quirk on you. He whispered something in your ear, and you looked really scared, we have no idea what he said to you. You didn't move after that, and that's when he started hitting you, and just... beating you senseless. He hit you in the head a lot, which is probably why you now can't remember anything. He was using you to torment not only Eri, but the rest of us too. He said if we came anywhere near either of you, he'd kill you. So, all we could do was stand back and watch... I failed you... I was meant to protect you... I'm so sorry this happened to you..."
The guilt had been getting to him for a while now, he didn't want her to be hurt, he had so many regrets, so many sleepless nights where he would think of all the things he could have done differently. It was eating him alive. He gripped the steering wheel hard in anger at himself.
That's when he felt a small soft hand place itself onto his. He looked at it in shock, and soon he felt all his guilt, all his anger and self-hatred disappear. His eyes widened.
"How... how did you do that?" They made eye contact. Her eyes were no longer their normal E/C shade. They were a deep green and were glowing slightly. He could see she was a bit surprised herself.
"I have no idea... are you sure I only have one quirk?" He had to focus back on the road, but his mind was racing faster than the cars. They agreed they'd discuss it later as she took her hand away from his. The back of his hand now cold from losing the warmth of her small hands. At least compared to his hands they were small.
The rest of the car ride was silent as they made their way to the school.
