"Step through here, any weapons you'd like to declare?"
"No."
"Alright. These are the rules. As a precaution patients are usually restrained during visits however since your mother has made such good progress we feel restraining her would set her back so please avoid unnecessary contact and keep a safe distance to be sure. If there is anything you feel that might trigger manic behavior please let us know now."
I glanced down at my belly and rubbed it.
"I see, we'll have your mother's doctor present. She'll inform you on how to proceed as well as help your mother process everything. Please keep this card pinned on your person at all times."
I shifted allowing the security to pin the visitors card on me.
"Okay then, you can go right through those doors and make a left. Door number seven is where you'll be meeting, the doctor should already be in there."
I nodded before following the directions. As I stood in front of the door I took a deep breath.
This was the first time I would be seeing my mother since she was admitted and I still felt it was a mistake, but I had to tell her about the baby. It's like no matter what she did I still wanted her to be my mom.
I knocked twice before opening the door.
"Hello, you must be Layla. I'm Doctor Harris." The lady that was seated stood up smiling.
"Nice to meet you." I said shaking her hand. "Thank you for all the progress you've made with my mother."
She shook her head. "No, I'm just doing my job. And your mother worked very hard to get to where she is."
I nodded frowning a little. I wasn't so sure I believed that would last but I wasn't trying to be negative.
I took the seat next to her and we talked about how she might react to my pregnancy for a few minutes before the door opened.
I watched as she came in being led by a nurse. She looked a lot different from the last time I saw her.
This was the best she had looked in years. Her hair was longer and in cornrows and her skin didn't have the greasy look from all the alcohol.
She smiled at the doctor and I felt my foot starting to shake as her eyes moved over to me.
"Hey ma." I said nervously.
I watched as she sat across from me and started looking me over.
"You... look good." She said nodding. "You pregnant too. Congratulations."
I blinked slowly. This was not what I was expecting but then I don't know what I was.
"Thank you." I said softly. "I'm glad to see you're doing better."
