Breaking Bad

Word Count: 457"Hi."
Unsure of how he'd respond, you stood at the doorway ready to leave the room if he lashed out at you.
He turned to you with a smile that made your heart flutter.
"Hello." he greeted you warmly.
You walked in and sat on his bed, watching him look through books and write bullet points on a notepad.
"What's that for?" You asked, referring to the notepad.
"Work for Don Eladio."
"Oof, looks boring." You said as you got up from the bed and walked over to the fireplace.
"Eh, it's not that bad."
"I'll have to take your word for it."
You took one of the porcelain angels from the shelf of the fireplace and scrutinized it just to keep yourself busy.
"Hey, Juan." You said, keeping your eyes on the angel.
"Yeah?" He said, turning to you.
"Where'd you get these little figurines from?"
"Got them from my grandma." He said as he got up and walked over to you.
"Oh, really?" You asked.
"Yeah, she said in her will that I get them."
"Aw, that's nice that you kept them." You smiled.
He laughed as he took the figurine, inspecting it.
You hated to ask him but you had to now that you've got him warmed up with the small talk.
"Why..."
You were suddenly extremely nervous.
"Why um... Why have you been avoiding me?"
You finally got the sentence out, in a rushed mess, albeit, but it was out there. In the air. It hung above the two of you like a thick fog.
There was a brief silence between the two of you. But he eventually answered.
He cut to the chase. He didn't beat around the bush.
"Because we're not meant for each other. You're too young for me. I'm just an old man, Y/N."
"Wh..." You didn't know how to respond.
"What? We've been together for 2 years and you suddenly think I'm too young for you? What happened to you? The old Juan wouldn't give two shits about that!"
"Don Eladio disapproves of it and I don't want him to think ill of me."
"Fuck Eladio! Who cares what he thinks about our relationship?!"
"Hey! You do not speak about Don Eladio that way!"
"I'm moving back to the U.S."
The room went quiet.
You continued.
"I'm gonna move away and you'll never see me again."
"Oh."
Tears stung at your eyes.
The silence went on for a long time until the sound of breaking glass broke it.
The angel Juan was holding slipped from his hands.
"Uh oh... Guess I should clean that up." He said before chuckling awkwardly.
You silently left the room.
That was the last time you'd ever see that room or him.
I wouldve put oh jeez instead of uh oh but juan would never say oh jeez in a million years.
