Opal's POV
I began to examine the books and noticed that all of them are cheesy romance novels. Normally I would be delighted, but knowing that they're probably from Hades I was pissed. I was trying to not speak to him but since he was probably trying to send some kind of message I was going to make sure that he would know what my thoughts were on it.
I left my room with all the books he gave me. As I raced through the hallways I was beginning to feel frustrated because I couldn't find him.
"Could you tell me where Hades is?" I asked one of the servants who was passing by.
"He's in a meeting right now." She answered
"I don't care. Where is he?" I insisted.
"He's in his office."
"And where is that?"

I followed the directions she gave me and quickly found his office. I slammed the door open, revealing a very large glass table with a group of people sitting down around it. I assumed that they were gods, probably Olympians, but I wasn't very worried. I dump the books into the table in front of his seat.
"What the fuck is this?" I yell while the other gods trade confused looks between them.
"Books." He answers unimpressed.
"Really? I thought that they were alpacas." I sighed. "I mean, what are you trying to say?" I continued.
"Can't we talk about this later? I'm in the middle of a meeting."
"And I'm in the middle of yelling at you!" I shouted a little louder than I would've liked.
"Feisty that one." One of them commented.
"Shut up." I said, which left the god speechless, nobody had probably told a god to shut up before. I could see that the god was going to say something but Hades looking at him was enough for him to remain quiet.
"Hades, is this really necessary?" A goddess asked.
"Well, Athena, you heard the girl, she's in the middle of yelling at me and we have been strongly advised to not interrupt her." It was difficult to be mad at him when he was defending me, but still. "You can continue, darling."
I sighed and lifted one book. "Romance." I put that one down and picked another one. "Romance" three more. "Romance."
"I don't really understand what your problem is."
"My problem is that I think that you're sending me a message. So let me make this clear. My entire life does not revolve around romance. I am perfectly fine on my own. I do not need you and I do not need anybody in my life. I've been managing to live by myself. I don't need a man and I certainly don't need you and that will never change. If you continue to send me more books like these I'll set them on fire and then use them to set this whole fucking palace on fire."
"You're being ridiculous."
"Am I?"
"Yes, five books isn't enough to burn the whole palace down."
"It's an expression, death boy. If I'm being ridiculous then I don't think that there are proper adjectives to describe you."
"I only sent those because I know that you like them and that you wanted these." He says gesturing towards the pile of books on the desk.
"How the fuck do you know that?"
"I'm a god, I know everything."
"And yet you still remain ignorant on when to fuck off."
"Opal, please, I would love to discuss my knowledge on that certain topic but right now I'm in the middle of the meeting."
"Fuck the meeting."
"You know that the only thing I'll be fucking is you"
"In your dreams, death boy."
"Aww, you have a nickname for me now."
"Well, If I'm going to find a way to destroy you we'll have to get personal so that I can enjoy it more."
"That's enough, both of you." Another god spoke.
"You don't get to determine what's enough or not here, Zeus." Hades spoke. I could tell from the way he said his name that Hades didn't like him very much."Now, Opal, I'm well aware of your feelings, especially since you made them perfectly clear."
"Fine. Enjoy your meeting then."
"We will." Zeus answered.
"I wasn't talking to you." After saying that I left the room and may have muttered something similar to "Thank you." under my breath.
***
A week later, I was reading one of the books Hades gave me when I was interrupted by a servant saying that "Lord Hades wanted to see me." I went to his office, only to find out that he was going to give me a tour of the palace, despite me saying that I didn't want it.
While he was saying something boring about the palace I was considering if he really was that bad. He gave me books, which makes me like him a bit more, and he gave me my mother back, maybe if I gave him a chance he wouldn't be so bad. But I was never going to show that to him.
He stopped walking when we reached a big wooden door. He opened it revealing the biggest library I had ever seen in my life. I was as happy as a little child who saw a candy shop for the first time.
"Why did you bring me here?" I asked, not taking my eyes off of the books.
"It's yours, all of it." He answered.
I was speechless. If I considered the possibility of liking him for the books he had given me before, using the same principles, I would be completely in love with him by now. But I wasn't planning on letting myself be bought that easily.
"Thank you." I said.
"You're welcome." He spoke walking towards one of the sofas that were in the room, as if he knew that it would take me ages before I wanted to leave.
I continued to explore, not caring for any of the conversations Hades tried to start. That was until then one of the topics caught my attention. "I know you like to learn about stories of me and my family's past, but the versions that some of the mortals invent are a bit exaggerated." He said when I picked up a mythological book
"Is that so?" I said in the most uninterested tone I could manage to fake.
"Yes."
"Tell me some of them, then." I challenged
"I don't know. Just tell me one you want to know."
I thought for a while. "Achilles and Patroclus were more than good buddies, right?"
"Yes, they continue to be madly in love even in the afterlife. You can go visit them someday, I'll go with you."
"I don't want you to."
After a while, I remembered another myth. "What about Persephone? Weren't you two together?"
"That's none of your business." He spoke in a cold tone, which made me reconsider my thoughts on him again. We never talked again that day, not even during dinner.

He walked me back to my room. I opened the door and noticed that he had intentions to come in, but I wouldn't let him, so I closed the door on his face.
He didn't try to come in again.

When I asked one of the servants who visited my room if there was somewhere for me to read outside in the palace, she said that there was a nice garden next to the kitchen, which thankfully was where she was headed. Because of that, I grabbed a book from the library (After decades of trying to choose one) and was reading while lying down on the grass. The fact that the grass was green and the sky wasn't the red I expected from the underworld was slightly disturbing. But despite that, the garden was extremely beautiful, there was a small lake and I could see the fishes swimming in it. There were some flowers with various colors as well. I was still angry with Hades, and that wasn't going to change in a long time.
My reading was interrupted when someone pulled my book away.
"I swear to god that I'll kill you Hades."
"I would be feeling slightly threatened if I was Hades." I looked up to see a man, who of course wasn't Hades, he was tall, but not as tall as Hades. Around 6 feet tall. His hair was brown and he wore a helmet with wings. He held a staff which I recognized. It was the caduceus. Which meant-
"Hi, I'm Her-"
"I know who you are."
"Really?" Hermes smiled as he gave me my book back.
"Yes. Do you know who I am?"
"No. But I'd love to." That was interesting enough for me to pay attention. Someone who cared.
"I'm Opal." I lift my hand for him to shake but he kisses it instead.
"Nice to meet you, Opal."
"Nice to meet you, Hermes."
He helped me stand up. "You know, Hades never lets me enter the palace. He has always been quite rude. But I can see that you're a lovely lady." He was either lying or he was completely blind. No one had ever used the words «lovely lady» to describe me.
"Well, I wouldn't want to upset you. It seems that I have no other choice but to invite you inside."
"It does look like that."
"Come on then."
