4 years later
Hades watched as Opal walked to the stage and received her diploma. He was so proud of her, she was graduating in maths. He was proud of her because she managed to get her life back, he was proud because she found help and managed to get back on track. But, most of all, Hades couldn't help thinking about how lucky he was to have Opal with him. Everyday, when he woke up and she was sleeping with her head on his chest, he was sure that she was the one he wanted to spend the rest of eternity with. She was the one who made him happy, the one who was there for him no matter what. They understood each other and they complemented one another.
Basically, they were made for each other.
As Hades watched her smile while leaving the stage he wished that they were alone in there so he could kiss her and tell her exactly how he felt about her. That's what he did everyday, he knew that Opal had always felt invisible her whole life, he knew that she had always felt alone, so he made sure that she was aware of her love for him. Made sure that she was aware of the fact that, to him, she was the only thing that mattered.
When the ceremony was over and she was finished with talking to her family, she went to see him. He couldn't help but smile, as he always did when he was with her. He gave her the flowers he had bought, she smiled and thanked him.
"You're so beautiful, my love." He said, pulling her closer to him and placing his lips against hers.
"You're not so bad, either." She said.
"I'm so proud of you. You're the strongest person I know."
Opal didn't answer, instead they stayed like that, hugging each other until it was time to go home.
Their home was in the mortal world, they found a compromise. But they weren't going to stay there for long that day, Hades had something planned. He took Opal out for dinner, but that wasn't it. She had her eyes closed now, and he was taking her to his favorite place. It was a park, a big green spot in the middle of a busy city. He used to go there to walk Cerberus, he never knew why, but Cerberus always wanted to go there. Now he knew that it was fate.
"You can open your eyes now." Hades said, and Opal did as he asked.
He couldn't help but laugh a little at her confusion.
"What are we doing here? This is where I used to come read."
"This is my favorite place in the entire world."
"Why?" She asked.
"Because this is where I fell in love with you." She blushed a little. "You were sitting there." He said, pointing to the grass. "I was walking Cerberus and I saw you, you were reading, but your face was wildly expressive. When I passed by you, you didn't even notice, you were so focused on muttering something under your breath. Something about how the main character was stupid and you would have solved the mystery much faster." He chuckled. "I started to go here everyday, just to see if I could find you, and you were always here. Every week a different book. And I enjoyed observing you, watching you have whole debates by yourself, watching you cry because of something that happened in the book. The thing is, you always thought that no one would pay attention. But I always did."
"That is a bit stalker of you, Hades." She joked and Hades wanted to punch her in the face for ruining their emotional moment. Not really, he never wanted to hurt her. "But seriously now, thank you for noticing that I'm there."
"Always."
When Hades noticed that Opal was distracted he got on one knee. "Love?" He called.
"Hmm?" She asked, without turning to face him.
"Could you turn around, please?" She did and Hades continued with his proposal. "Will you marry me, Opal?"
"Yes!" She said, tears forming in her eyes. "Yes, I will!"
He placed the ring on her finger. It was a silver ring with a green stone, an opal, it matched the necklace he gave her on the first day, the one she was still wearing to this day. He got up to kiss her. "Will you be my queen?" He asked.
"You already know the answer, just kiss me already."
And so he did.And now, years later, Hades is watching Opal while she finishes reading one of her books, and she pretends that she doesn't feel his gaze on her. It gets harder to pretend that she doesn't feel him kissing her shoulder, but she has years of practice.
And she'll have centuries, too. They'll be together forever and there hasn't been one day where Opal doubts that she will love him for eternity.
