chapter five - you can't open your eyes for a while

" You guys are gonna ring up the first metal detector we walk through. "

Once Y/n reached her cabin she wasted no time in packing some of her stuff. She grabbed an old bag of hers and shoved everything she would need inside. A music iPod with every single song in the world (thanks to her father) although there were already many playlist made with basically just Taylor Swift. Apollo was a big fan of the blonde singer.

She didn't bother packing pajamas seeing as they probably wouldn't stop much to sleep. She put in some extra pants, shorts, shirts, a toothbrush and finally a book about the constellations in the sky. This time it was a gift from her aunt, Artemis.

When she zipped up the bag she stared at it nervously. She started biting the skin off around her nails, an old anxiety habit she had picked up a while ago.

"You're going huh?" Maverick spoke from the corner of the room which made her jump and yelp in surprise.

"Oh Styx! Mave! Don't do that. Dear gods." She gasped for air and placed her hand over her heart as if she'd just had a heart attack.

He walked from the dark corner and finally was visible to her. They were the only people in the cabin at the moment.

"Are you going?" He asked again.

She looked down sadly, "Yes..."

He hugged her tightly like never before. "Just- be careful okay?!"

"I will, don't worry." She mumbled into his shirt.

"If Jackson does anything I swear to gods—"

"NO!" She yelled. "No." She shook her head, "it's not like that." Y/n swallowed, "At all."

"Sure."

"I'm serious."

"Okay... whatever you say."

She could sense the hesitation in his voice. Maverick was scared for her to go. He had lost her one time years prior and finally got her back two years ago.

Since then he's always been incredibly protective. He was glad most of the time that she didn't get any quests. Whenever she had to duel with someone he would always watch from afar to make sure the other person wouldn't cut her. If they did he would bring hellfire.

She appreciated his attentiveness but sometimes it could feel suffocating. All y/n has ever wanted was to explore the world beyond the borders of this camp. And this was her ultimate chance to do so.

"I'll swear I'll be careful." She squeezed her brother's hand and smiled reassuringly.

He walked away from her and towards his stuff. She used this time to zip up her bag but then reopened it to put in a hairbrush and some extra hair ties. Then she zipped it up again.

Maverick was holding something in his hand by the time he got back.

"Dad gave me this." He said motioning to the object in his hands, "in case I would ever need it."
