"Sure. I'd have to check with my mom but I'm positive she'll let me go."
"Tobio-chan's sweet sixteen? I've got nothing going on, so I don't see why not. Hold off on inviting Iwa though, he's busy on the 22nd."
"Why invite me?"
"Because I want… I want to apologize and uh, make up. …. My sister put me up to this. It would be nice to celebrate with more people though."
"Why the hell not? I've got nothing planned.""Really Kageyama-kun? You want me to be there?"
"Uh yeah. It'd be great."
"Of course. I'll be there at 3:00 on the dot.""The invite is beautiful. Thank you, Kageyama. I'll make sure to be there. Will Miwa be present as well?"
"No."
"Sorry to hear that.""It's not happening. I have better things to do than spend time with you."
"I'm so sorry! I'm really busy that day but I'll make it up to you. Save me a slice of cake, please?"
So many had agreed. Why are none of them here? Why did only one show up? Why is it that the only one to have explained their absence was Oikawa?
It makes sense that Kindaichi didn't come. It was more surprising that he agreed in the first place. He seemed reluctant while doing so but he did. But Hinata? He seemed so excited and even confirmed that he was given permission and yet he isn't here. Even she, my crush whom I thought would surely decline, said she was gonna come. But, like the other two, she wasn't here.
Miwa isn't around to celebrate and neither of my parents even tried to wish me a happy birthday, though I never expected them to.
No. No one but one person showed and cared enough to celebrate with me. Kiyoko. She arrived early to help me decorate before the rest of the guests arrived. She answered the door when the pizza arrived an hour into what should have been the party. She made sure I saw Oikawa's text.
Oikawa-San
I'm so sorry, Tobio-chan. - 15:30
I forgot I promised my brother I'd watch Takeru. -15:30
Depending how long this lasts I'll try to stop and drop off your present. -15:30
Happy Birthday 🎉 -15:3017:43. That's the current time. He still hasn't come by. I wonder if he just didn't wanna come so he lied about having to watch his nephew. I bet he and the others don't like me. I know Kunimi doesn't.
I want some alcohol. Maybe just some beer. But Kiyoko is still here. I can't drink with her around. She'd definitely tell the upperclassman and teachers. Miwa too.
We already ate and now she's helping me clean the place since it's obvious no one is coming.
Ding Dong!
Or maybe I spoke too soon. I look towards Kiyoko who looks back. Maybe there's some hope. I rush to the door to open it. Maybe it's Hinata. Or maybe she finally arrived? I desperately hope.
However, my hope is a ghost as I see Oikawa at the door, holding a box, confused. He probably noticed the lack of cars in the driveway. But I don't care to ask.
I can't take it anymore tonight. No one cares. I walk to the kitchen and take a bottle of beer. I know they're both watching me confused. I know how sad the place must look to Oikawa with half down decorations, an untouched cake, no guests, and me. A sad, miserable, lonely alcoholic downing a bottle of beer.
One of the two run to me and take the bottle. I think it's Oikawa. I stopped paying attention as soon as the liquid touched my lips.
"Tobio-chan! What do you think you're doing," he questions loudly. Too loud in my opinion.
"Drinking," is all I can respond with.
I feel arms wrap around me in a warm embrace. Too bad I don't have the energy to return it.
"What happened? Why is no one here?" I hear him ask, however I can't answer.
I don't think I could without crying.
Kiyoko replies for me. "No one showed," She says.
"Who all RSVPed?"
"Us, Kindaichi, Hinata, and the girl Kageyama likes."
"Did they explain as to why they didn't come?"
It goes silent and I presume Kiyoko shook her head.
"What about family members?"
"Neither parent made an attempt to show and Miwa is out of town."
Once again, the room is silent. The only sound I can hear is one of the decorations falling off the wall, other than that. It's silent. Why do they care so much? I just want to indulge in my addiction.
"I'm sorry to hear that. How about we watch some one piece and relax? While we're at it we can eat some of the untouched cake. After that you can explain why you're drinking alcohol."
Shit. I suppose I should have seen this coming. At least he's going to let me relax first.
I nod.
"Alright, just don't tell anyone, please."
