Chapter 5
“Penelope.” I whispered and felt her hand grasp mine. I breathed a sigh of relieve and tightened my grip on her hand. As we ventured forward the corridor like hallway I noticed the walls were bare. Not a picture in sight.
Did Maribel not have any family? I felt a ping of nausea in my stomach and winced.
“Kingsley, what's wrong?” Penelope asked. Her voice twisted with worry and fear.
“Nothing, it's fine.” I reassured her. We continued on until we reached the end of the hallway. There were three wooden doors. On in front of us, one to the right and one to the left. I turned back and looked at Penelope's pale face. Her emerald green eyes were wide in shock.
“Which door?” I smirked trying to lighten the mood. She looked away from me and at the doors. Her eyes switching back and forth between the pale gray wooden doors and then she took in a deep breath. When she exhaled she pointed to the door on the right. I carefully approached the door ad slowly opened it. It was a small cardboard box like room and the walls were a dingy white. There were numerous file cabinets and two tables with files and papers stacked on top of them.
“Well know we know where the papers from the living room went.” Penelope joked lifting up some folders. I walked over to a file cabinet that had a drawer open. There were various manila envelopes inside but only one caught my eye.
The one with my name on it.
My eyes widened as I reached to pick it up when another bang sounded off. Penelope screamed and I accidentally slammed the file cabinet shut.
“Shit.” I whispered. I went to open it again but it wouldn’t budge.
“It's locked.” I said cursing my luck.
“Kingsley?” I looked over and saw Penelope at the door. She was pointing at something so I walked to her and saw her finger led to the door that was once in front of us.
“It came from in there.” She said hoarsely. I nodded and walked past her to the door. I gripped the handle and Penelope yelped. I turned around and rose and eyebrow at her. She had covered her mouth.
“Sorry.” She whispered. I turned back to the door and slowly turned the handle and opened the door. I threw it all the way open before going in.
“It's pitch black.” Penelope breathed. I started into the room and she pulled on the chain.
“What are you doing?” she hissed. I turned around and glared at her.
“I'm trying to find a light switch.” I whispered harshly. She stared at me for a couple seconds and then sighed.
“Alright. Hurry up.” I turned back around and shuffled into the dark. My hands in front of me waving around to find something to grab onto. I continued shuffling and bumped into something sharp. I yelled in pain and stopped for a second to let the pain soak in before continuing.
“Kingsley!” Penelope yelled.
“I'm fine.” I yelled back. Once the pain subsided I continued on to find a light source. I eventually found a wall and felt along it.
“Oh come on. There's got to be a light somewhere.” I said frustrated as my hands only brushed bare walls. After about a minute of searching the walls I finally felt a light switch.
“Come in Penelope! I found the ligh-” I flicked the switch and almost couldn't believe what was in this room. The walls were a taupe brown and on the wall at the farthest end of the room was a man restrained to it. “
What the?” I heard Penelope gasp behind me. Suddenly the man looked up and stared at us. His eyes were the same color as Penelope's, but of a lighter shade and seemed to glow. He had long black hair with white stripes in it and was dressed in a shredded T shirt with a leather jacket over and black jeans with gloves and bracelets. A smile then stretched across his face and two massive black wings expanded out from his back. I placed a hand out in front of Penelope and started to back away.
“I see you've found my secret.” Penelope and I jumped and turned to see Maribel standing by the door with a pissed off look on her face.
