The next morning, I went to university and afterwards to the café. I was on my way home as I walked past this store. It was the tiny store Jack had worked at. I thought about going inside, as it was still open, when I heard someone calling my name.
"Collin? W-What are you doing here?" I stumbled, as I felt like I was doing something illegal, when I wasn't.
"I wanted to visit you at the café. I didn't know you would be done just yet." he said with a questioning undertone.
"Well yeah, I thought I would go home a little earlier because I wanted to study."
"Then why did it look like you were about to go in that store?" he put out.
"Because I was?" I finally confessed with an awkward smile.
"Why? This doesn't look like a store you would need anything from." Collin didn't know about the store, so I had to fill him in.
"It's uh... It's the store Jack worked at..." I said, looking at my shoes.
Collin was surprised. He probably didn't expect that, but I told the truth, because I felt like I couldn't lie to him anymore.
As I looked up again, I saw a disappointed face. "I know, I know... I just thought it wouldn't hurt anyone if I would just ask the owner a few questions too." I said defending.
"Well maybe you're right..." Collin tried to get my point and I liked that about him. Even though he didn't think it was good, he still supported me.
Saying that, he turned to the door and walked inside, leaving me behind.
"Collin, what are you doing? You really don't have to-"
But he already had the doorknob in his hand. "...okay..."
So I walked after him and what I saw were all kind of things. Really weird things too, but mostly electronic stuff. Behind the counter I couldn't see anyone and neither did Collin, so he started calling for someone. "Hello! Is anyone there?"
"I don't think so." I admitted, while thinking about leaving again.
But Collin had other plans. "Then why was the door open. And I thought the sign said 'open'."
I had no idea, but it seemed like a dead end. Collin on the other hand continued looking around, and as I turned around to tell him that we should leave, I saw a door hidden by a thin tapestry behind the counter. Since it was hanging askew, I could see the doorknob. So I decided not to leave, but instead walked over there. "Ena, what are you doing? Come back here!"
"No, look. There's a door..." I pushed the tapestry aside, so Collin could see. I opened the door and it revealed itself a mysterious room with old maps and books and some computers on a few tables with chairs and fast-food drinks, as if often a few people were working there.
I wasn't the only one who was confused by the room. "What is this?" Collin asked.
"I don't know, but someone is still logged in, in this laptop." I hastily walked to the table the laptop was sitting on, but Collin wasn't as committed as I.
"What, so you just want to go at someone's laptop?" he pointed out.
"No, you're right. That would be wrong... But maybe we could find something about Jack." I didn't know what to do. On one hand, I wanted to know too badly what happened, but on the other hand, I didn't want to do anything illegal. But either way, before I could hit any key, another door opened and a man, in his thirties, walked through.
