Ivy's POV
"Can I talk to you?" I asked him, seeing how tensed up he was.
"What?"
"I know we didn't discuss the matter of this type of mission before and the timing for this is not the best, but we have to set some ground rules before we land."
"Mhm..." He sighed heavily.
"First of all, please don't shut me out. We're supposed to be partners. It's not about being mission partners anymore, James. We're involved now. I don't want you to be all distant and snarky again. We have to figure out how to juggle those two aspects together."
He didn't say anything, his eyes wandered everywhere except me.
"I think that despite the fact we're on good terms now, we have to set some priorities."
He started to fiddle with his knife in his hand. His behavior started to annoy me.
"James, for God's sake, look at me!" I snapped at him, taking his knife out of his hand. He looked at me offended. "Please talk to me."
"What do you want me to say?" His eyes were full of worry.
"I want you to set ground rules with me about this mission. I know it's gonna be hard, for both of us. But... But the mission comes first. The safety of people comes first."
"Ivy..." He started to interrupt me.
"No, James. No saving me in favor of saving those people. They're more important now. They're more important than me."
"Ivy!" He looked at me angrily.
"No, promise me! If something happens, you're gonna save those people, not me. Do you understand? Those people. Not me. Promise me!"
"I can't..." He gritted his teeth.
"You can and you will. Look, if Steve and Natasha can do it, we can do it too..."
"They can do it 'cause they're not paired up!" He spat.
"Doesn't matter, they will work side by side, just like us." I responded, keeping a tighter grip on his knife.
I could see in his eyes that he was processing what I said to him. I knew it'll be very hard for him. For both of us. I understood the risks, the responsibility, and the weight of this mission if something will go south. If people will get hurt, if we'll get hurt...
I lightly grabbed his hand and squeezed it.
"I know what you're thinking, believe me, I'm thinking the same thing. I'm struggling as hard as you. But we signed up to save people. We didn't sign up to decide whose life is more valuable. Those people are like us. They have family, friends, and someone close to their hearts. And we promised we'll save them."
He grabbed my chin with his thumb.
"Promise me, James. The mission comes first." I looked into his eyes.
