After losing her job and being left at the altar, Dr. Fiona Page is left to pick up the pieces of a "picture perfect" life that she never got to plan for herself.
On an impromptu trip to Portland, she gets invited to a New Year's Eve party by an old friend determined to help Fiona get her sparkle back. It's there that she meets a charming and very well-read man named James. The two of them hit it off immediately, and sparks fly. After too many drinks and a lot of dancing, the inevitable happens, and Fiona has one of the most romantic nights of her life.
The next morning, Fiona wakes up in her hotel room alone - no note, no phone number, nothing. All she has is the first name of the man who entered her life like a bolt of lightning and vanished just as quickly. Fiona writes James off completely, and is about to return to her home in Kansas when a surprise offer comes in to be hired on as a part-time professor in the department of Sociology at the University of Portland.
For the first time in her life, Fiona decides to take a leap of faith. But when she walks into the Sociology department to meet the rest of the faculty, she comes face to face with the man she knows only as James. Rivalries begin, secrets emerge, and things get complicated.
