I don't want to live on someday when my motto is last week
I don't want to be responsible for your fractured heart
And it's wounded beat
I don't want to be a substitute for the smoke you've been inhaling
What do you thank me
What do you thank me for?

FIONA
January 18, 2023

She woke up to the sound of her phone buzzing on the nightstand. It sounded like a jackhammer. She didn't know how long she had slept for, but she felt hung over. Fiona groaned, hand fumbling as her eyes remained closed. When she grabbed it, she carefully and slowly opened one eye, seeing a text from Bea.

[Bea-Bop]: Did you really go home with him?

[Bea-Bop]: What happened to enemies with benefits? 😏

Fiona let out another groan and typed a quick "yes" before she rolled onto her back, one arm stretching out. She expected to hit James, but the bed was empty. Slowly, she sat up and looked around. The bedroom door was open, the curtains were slightly drawn to let some of the dreary day outside in. Rain hit the window and everything was bathed in greys and blues. Typical west coast weather that she missed more than she cared to say.

Alpine was curled up at the edge of the bed, sleeping peacefully. Her heart skipped a few beats when she realized that she was waking up in a very similar situation as New Year's Day, but when she glanced to her right, she saw James's phone sitting on the nightstand, along with his watch, house keys, and wallet. If he skipped town, someone either kidnapped him, or she could lock him out.

And then, Fiona was hit with the smell of coffee, and the sound of music coming from downstairs. She smiled and eased herself out of bed. Her sweater was still on, but her sweatpants had been tossed somewhere on the floor the night before. She gave Alpine a little scratch on the head. The cat trilled and stretched before passing out again and Fiona chuckled.

"I wish we could trade places, then I wouldn't have to work."

She tugged on her sweats and headed out of the bedroom. The music got a little louder as she headed down the hall, trying to find the bathroom. She just wanted to splash some water on her face.

To her left, she spotted a door open, just a crack. Fiona instinctively went for it, and pushed it open. Her jaw dropped a little when she realized that she was in a little girl's room- one that looked like it hadn't been touched in a long time. There was dust on the dresser and the little vanity, and stuffed animals that looked like they hadn't been held by anyone for a while. This must have been his daughter's room. She took a breath and everything in her screamed to leave and shut the door, and to not mention it to James.
