"You're sure about this?" Fiona asked as she walked arm in arm with Bea toward the entrance of a beautiful house in a quiet, wealthy neighborhood.
"I'm positive," Bea replied.
It was 11:00pm. They both started pregaming in Fiona's hotel room as they were getting ready, and intended to leave by 8:00... and then 9:00... and finally managed to get out the door by 10:30. Apparently the party was going late, academics blowing off steam and all that. Fiona understood it. Academics were some of the most hardcore partiers she had ever met in her life. The Christmas party at her old job generally turned into a drunken frat party when all of the department heads left. People were making out on sofas, singing karaoke, and someone threw up in the fake plant in the hallway and blamed it on a student.
Fiona and Bea strode up the front walk. They were both dressed to the nines, using the money that was left in Fiona and John's honeymoon fund to go to a boutique and pick out the most expensive dresses and shoes that they possibly could.
Fiona was in a little black dress with black pumps while Bea picked a glittery purple number with pearlescent white shoes. They even got their hair and makeup done.
On Monday, Fiona was going back to Kansas to look for a realtor and sell the house. John has been hounding her about it, telling her he wants half of the sale price.
The only time he texted her was to ask about money. Fiona never responded.
She looked around at the other houses on the block and felt instantly intimidated. This was the kind of neighborhood that Fiona had always wanted to live in, but her family could never afford it. The place was gorgeous, kind of like a California beach house that glittered in the night sky. They could hear the party when they pulled up. Music was pumping from the house, but none of the neighbors seemed to mind. In fact, their lights were off. They could have very well been at the party, too.
